๐Ÿ’Š **Medicare Open Enrollment: 5 Questions We Hear at the Pharmacy**

Medicare can be confusing. And with Open Enrollment starting Thursday, we thought we'd answer a few questions we hear regularly at Crescent Care.

**1๏ธโƒฃ Do I have to change Medicare plans every year?**

No! You can keep your current plan if you're happy with it. But reviewing your coverage every year is a good idea because plans can change.

**2๏ธโƒฃ Can my prescription costs change even if I keep the same plan?**

Absolutely. Copays, deductibles, covered medications, and pharmacy networks can change from one year to the next.

**3๏ธโƒฃ Does every Medicare plan cover the same medications?**

No. Each plan has its own list of covered medications, called a *formulary*. A medication covered under one plan might not be covered under another, or it may have different restrictions or costs.

**4๏ธโƒฃ Can I keep using Crescent Care Pharmacy?**

That depends on your plan. Pharmacy networks vary, and even when a pharmacy participates in a plan, your costs may differ depending on whether it's a preferred pharmacy.

**5๏ธโƒฃ Where can I compare Medicare plans?**

Visit **Medicare.gov** to compare plans based on your medications, pharmacy preferences, and expected costs. Oklahoma's SHIP program also provides free, unbiased Medicare counseling.

๐Ÿ“… **Medicare Open Enrollment: October 15 โ€“ December 7**

At Crescent Care, we don't sell insurance plans or handle enrollment. But we're always happy to answer questions about your medications and help you understand how your coverage affects your prescriptions.

**And remember: there's no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your healthcare.** ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ’Š **Your Medicare plan may changeโ€”even if you don't!**

If you've been happy with your Medicare prescription coverage this year, you might be thinking, *โ€œWhy bother looking at it again?โ€*

Here's why.

Medicare plans can make changes every year, even when you stay enrolled in the same plan.

Those changes might include:

๐Ÿ’Š **Covered medications** โ€” A prescription covered this year might have different coverage next year.

๐Ÿ’ฐ **Prescription costs** โ€” Copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs can change.

๐Ÿฅ **Pharmacy networks** โ€” Your pharmacy might no longer be in your plan's network, or your costs there could be different.

And sometimes, you won't realize something has changed until you're standing at the pharmacy counter in January.

**That's why reviewing your coverage every year is so important.**

๐Ÿ“… Medicare Open Enrollment begins **October 15 and runs through December 7.**

At Crescent Care, we don't select insurance plans or handle enrollment, but we're happy to answer questions about your medications and help you understand how coverage changes may affect your prescriptions.

For plan comparisons, visit **Medicare.gov**.

A little homework now might save you some unpleasant surprises later. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ’š Sometimes the most important thing your pharmacist can give you isn't a prescription. It's an answer.
We've spent this week talking about some of the things pharmacists do beyond filling prescriptions.
But there's one part of the job that's hard to put on a list:
Being available when you have a question.
Maybe you started a new medication and something doesn't feel right.
Maybe you're standing in front of a shelf wondering which product to buy.
Maybe you heard something about a supplement and want to know if it's okay with your prescriptions.
Maybe you missed a dose and aren't sure what to do.
Or maybe you just want somebody to explain something in plain English.
Ask Anna.
You don't need an appointment. You don't need to feel like it's an important enough question. And you definitely don't need to apologize for asking. ๐Ÿ˜Š
That's one of the reasons we're here.
So we'll finish our American Pharmacists Month week with this:
๐Ÿ‘‡ What have you always wanted to ask a pharmacist?
Put your question in the comments, send it to us, or just ask Anna the next time you're at the counter.
We might even turn some of your questions into future posts.

๐Ÿคง The OTC aisle doesn't have to be a guessing game.
Cold medicine. Allergy medicine. Cough medicine. Pain relievers. Sleep aids.
Walk down the aisle and there may be five different products that all seem to treat the same thing.
So how do you choose?
The answer isn't always the box with the biggest letters on the front. ๐Ÿ˜Š
Many OTC products contain multiple ingredients, and sometimes two products with different names contain the same medication. Some ingredients may also interact with prescriptions you're already taking or may not be a good choice with certain health conditions.
That's where your pharmacist can help.
Tell us:
๐Ÿ’š What symptoms you're trying to treat
๐Ÿ’Š What medications you're already taking
โค๏ธ Any health conditions we should consider
๐Ÿ“ฆ What product you're thinking about using
Then let us help you narrow down the choices.
Sometimes you don't need more medicine.
You just need the right medicine.
So before you stand in front of that shelf reading six boxes and wondering what on earth the difference is...
Come ask us. We'll help.

๐Ÿ’‰ โ€œI never get the flu. Do I really need a flu shot?โ€
We hear that one.
And if you've gone years without getting the flu, it's understandable to wonder whether you really need a vaccine every year.
But avoiding the flu in the past doesn't tell us what will happen this season.
Influenza viruses change over time, which is one reason the flu vaccine is updated each year. And while a flu shot can't guarantee you won't get sick, vaccination can reduce your risk of getting influenza and reduce the severity of illness if you do get it.
There's another reason, too.
Your flu shot isn't only about protecting you.
It can also help protect the people around youโ€”family, friends, coworkers and others in our community who may be at greater risk of serious complications from influenza.
So if โ€œI never get the fluโ€ has been your reason for putting off the shot, we'd encourage you to think about it a little differently this year.
You don't get vaccinated because you know you're going to get the flu.
You get vaccinated because you don't know. ๐Ÿ’š
And right now is a good time.
๐Ÿ’‰ Flu shots are available now at Crescent Care Pharmacy.
Stop in and see usโ€”we'll take care of you.

Facebook โ€” Tuesday 10/6
๐Ÿ’Š โ€œCan I take this with my other medicines?โ€
That's one of the best questions you can ask your pharmacist.
And when we say โ€œother medicines,โ€ we mean more than just your prescriptions.
That new allergy medicine.
The ibuprofen you take when your back hurts.
A sleep aid.
Vitamins.
Herbal products.
That supplement your friend swears by. ๐Ÿ˜Š
They can all matter.
Some products can interact with prescription medications. Others may duplicate something you're already taking, increase certain side effects, or simply not be a good choice with one of your health conditions.
That's one advantage of asking your pharmacist before you add something new.
At Crescent Care, we already have your prescription medication history in front of us. Tell us what you're thinking about taking and let us help you look at the whole picture.
And don't worry about whether it's a โ€œsillyโ€ question.
If you're wondering about it, ask us.
That's part of what your pharmacist is here for. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ’š Your pharmacist does more than fill prescriptions.
October is American Pharmacists Month, and it seems like a pretty good time to talk about what actually happens behind the pharmacy counter.
Yes, we fill prescriptions. But that's only part of the job.
We're also looking at whether medications work safely together. Answering questions about side effects. Helping choose an OTC product. Talking with doctors when something doesn't look right. Working through insurance problems. Giving vaccines. And sometimes simply helping someone understand what they're taking and why.
But there's something else we think matters at Crescent Care:
We know our patients.
When you've been coming here for years, you're not just a prescription number. We know your medication history. We often know what's changed. And when you walk up to the counter with a question, you can actually talk to the pharmacist who is taking care of you.
That's one of the things we still believe a community pharmacy should be.
So during American Pharmacists Month, remember:
You don't need a prescription to talk to your pharmacist.
Have a question? Come ask Anna. She'll probably have an answer. And if she doesn't, she'll help you find one. ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ’‰ Anna says it's time! Flu shots start TODAY at Crescent Care Pharmacy.
We've spent this week talking about respiratory seasonโ€”flu, RSV and pneumococcal diseaseโ€”and today we're putting prevention into action.
For most people, September and October are good times to get the annual flu vaccine, ideally before flu activity begins increasing in the community.
The flu vaccine is recommended each season for most people 6 months and older, and it's especially important for people at greater risk of serious complications from influenza.
And here's something different this year:
๐Ÿฆ  All three virus components in the 2026โ€“27 U.S. flu vaccines were updated from last season, including the H3N2 component.
But the most important part is pretty simple:
Flu shots are here. Anna is ready. And now is a good time to get yours. ๐Ÿ’š
Stop by Crescent Care and talk with us about your flu shotโ€”or about any of the vaccines we've discussed this week.
We'll help you figure out what you're due for.

๐Ÿซ Still think the pneumonia vaccine starts at 65? The recommendation changed.
For years, many people associated pneumococcal vaccination with turning 65.
Today, routine pneumococcal vaccination begins at age 50 for adults who haven't previously received the recommended pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. Some adults younger than 50 may need it as well because of certain health conditions or other risk factors. CDC
Why does it matter?
Pneumococcal bacteria can cause pneumonia, but they can also cause more serious infections such as bloodstream infections and meningitis. Older adults and people with certain medical conditions are at greater risk of serious illness. CDC
Here's where it can get confusing:
๐Ÿ’‰ Which pneumococcal vaccine you need can depend on your age, health conditions and which pneumonia vaccines you've already received. There are several different pneumococcal vaccines, so this isn't necessarily something you have to figure out from memory. CDC
If you're 50 or older and aren't sure you're up to date, ask us.
We can look at your vaccination history and help determine what you may need.
And tomorrow...
๐Ÿ’‰ It's flu-shot time at Crescent Care. Anna has given us the go-ahead. ๐Ÿ˜Š
