Are diagnoses like sciatica, tennis elbow, tendonitis, inflammation, or any other fancy term, actually helpful?
Are they really telling us what's going on?

Apart from calming us down a bit (which has its place) - not really. It is just a medical term for what you already know is happening.

10 people can come in with a "diagnosis of sciatica" and all have different symptoms and all be treated differently.

It's important to find a practitioner who can explain to you why you are experiencing this pain and not just give you a general term which doesn't help you or your pain.

If you're tired of living in pain or just getting a diagnosis and being sent home, give us a call to find out how we can help 845-608-0380

Only addressing your pain and not what's causing you to have said pain is like trying to fill a bucket of water with a hole in it.

The bucket will never stay full for long. Fix the the hole and p**f the bucket will magically stay full

The same is true for pain. If you only treat the pain and not the cause of the pain then you will feel better for a bit but it won't last very long. If you treat the cause that's when the magic kicks in.

It's important to find a practitioner who addresses both: your pain and what's causing it.

Don't wait 3-6 months before you start to seek care.

Getting treatment immediately after an injury will help you recover quicker.

Waiting for an injury to become chronic means more systems get involved which makes recovery longer.

A primary headache is a headache with no underlying cause, or at least no cause that's been identified by science. A secondary headache is when there is something more systemic going on and the headache is a side-effect of that.

For example, a migraine or cluster headache are considered primary headaches because there is nothing systemic going on that is causing them. On the other hand, hormonal headaches or sinus headaches are due to either the fluctuations in hormones or sinus congestion - clear isses that are causing the headaches.

Regardless of the type of headache you have, acupuncture is very helpful in treating all types of headaches.

If you experience headaches or know anyone that does, DM or call us (845-608-0380) to see how we can help.

Why kegels aren't the end all be all for your pelvic floor.

Kegels are a great exercise to help strengthen your pelvic floor. However, if this is the only exercise your therapist or doctor gave you you might want to find a new one...

The pelvic floor, like all systems in our body does NOT work alone. Doing only kegels is like trying to fill up a pitcher of water with a hole at the bottom.

Proper breathing and proper core work is probably a better place to begin than kegel.

DM or call us (845-608-0380) to see how we can help you.

Location:
The pelvic floor consists of muscle and connective tissue which attach from your coccyx (tailbone) to your p***c bone at the front, and from one ischial tuberosity (sits bones) to the other. It sort of form a diamond like shape from coccyx - ischial tuberosity - p***c bone - ischial tuberosity - coccyx (this will be important later for some breathing exercises).

Function:
The 3 main functions of the pelvic floor are to prevent pelvic organs from falling out, opening and closing your va**na, re**um, and urethra, and s*xual function.
It also plays a big role in breathing and stabilization.

Symptoms of dysfunction:
When the pelvic floor is not functioning properly, it can lead to a whole host of symptoms. Some of the more common symptom are, frequent/urgent urination, frequent UTI's, urinary leakage (when you laugh, cough, sneeze, or exercise), constipation, painful s*x (especially with pe*******on), unable to have an or**sm unable to hold an er****on, organ prolapse, as well as a wide range of muscular pains.

How to help:
Finding a qualified practitioner who has experience and training in treating the pelvic floor is your best bet to help you to get back to your regular self again.

Self help:
Proper breathing is probably the best thing you can do for your pelvic floor.

Look out for future posts about proper breathing techniques so you can get back to living your life w/o these concerns!

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms or any other health concerns DM or call us (845-608-0380) we can probably help!

In every profession, there will be those who are very good at what they do, those not as good, and the bad apples who honestly shouldn’t be in practice.

If you have had a bad experience in your health journey (or know some who has), don't give up. Do not disregard a certain path because of one bad apple. There will always be "a bad doctor, acupuncturist, physical therapist, etc". But the majority are good and can really help.

Having a bad experience, especially when it comes to your health is not ok. But don't give up. Your future self will thank you 🙏🏻

Real talk tho.
A recent study showed that coffee may limit the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments.

So, if you are a big coffee fan and not getting the best results with your acupuncture treatments, there are a few options. You might want to not drink coffee the day of your treatment or at least avoid coffee a few hours before and after your treatments.

Don't worry. I'd never tell you to abstain.

Here's the quick and dirty.

In order for your tissues to heal it needs blood flow. Blood helps bring nutrients and clean up debris.

Ice constricts blood vessels thereby decreasing blood flow.

Ice may numb the area making you not feel pain/discomfort but that's about all it is doing.

Movement and acupuncture and 2 great ways to increase blood flow to a specific region of the body.

I get this question all the time. Should I do Acupuncture? Physical therapy? Chiropractic? Homeopathy? Massage? Athletic trainer? Etc

My biased opinion, yes, acupuncture is right for you. Acupuncture is an incredible medicine and can accomplish so much.
It is important to remember Rome wasn't built in a day. If you "tried acupuncture once and it didn't help" it's probably because you only tried it once. Imagine going to the gym once and wondering where your beach body is.

That being said. The above mentioned approaches are all wonderful and very helpful.
I believe it is more important to find a competent practitioner you vibe with than choosing one approach over the other.

A few things come to mind with this one.

First and foremost, you want to make sure your acupuncturist is licensed to practice acupuncture in your state. Using an unlicensed practitioner puts you at risk and likely means less effective treatment.

Next, consider the scope of their practice. There are general acupuncturist and acupuncturist who specialize in treating specific conditions. This works similarly to MD's; there are general practitioners and doctors who specialize/treat certain conditions.

Before you book a treatment, ask: does the acupuncturist have experience treating -insert complaint/condition-?

The last thing you must consider is comfort.
Do you vibe with the practitioner/ practice? No matter how good a practitioner is, if they are disrespectful or make you feel uncomfortable in any way, it's probably a good idea to seek out someone else.
