Congratulations to our DAISY Award recipient, McKenna Bonner, RN! 🌼

The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who provide extraordinary clinical care with compassion, kindness, and dedication, and McKenna exemplifies those qualities every day.

A recent patient shared how McKenna's compassion and professionalism made a difficult experience in the Emergency Department a little easier. When the patient arrived scared, in significant pain, and unsure of what was happening, McKenna's calm, reassuring presence made all the difference.

She took the time to listen, offer comfort, explain what to expect, and provide encouragement during a difficult and uncertain experience. Her genuine concern helped ease the patient's fears and made them feel heard, valued, and cared for.

Whether providing expert care, offering a comforting word, or helping patients navigate some of their most challenging moments, McKenna consistently demonstrates the qualities that make nursing such a meaningful profession.

Thank you, McKenna, for the exceptional care you provide to our patients and families.

Beth Jelinek, MD, recently joined WCBC Radio live to discuss ovarian cancer awareness and the importance of knowing the signs, understanding risk factors, and taking a proactive approach to women's health.

While there is no routine screening test for ovarian cancer for most women, understanding your family history and being aware of changes in your body can help support earlier detection.

One preventive option women may want to discuss with their provider is the removal of the fallopian tubes after completing childbearing. Research has shown that many ovarian cancers may begin in the fallopian tubes, making this procedure a potential way to reduce the likelihood of developing the disease.

During Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, take time to learn the symptoms, understand your personal risk, and talk with your provider about steps you can take to protect your health.

April Cross, CRNP, recently joined WCBC Radio live to discuss palliative care and how it can help patients and families navigate serious illness with greater comfort and support.

At the UPMC Western Maryland Palliative Care Clinic, patients receive specialized care focused on improving quality of life, managing symptoms, and addressing the physical, emotional, and practical challenges that often accompany serious illness.

During the interview, April shared that palliative care is not the same as hospice care and can be provided alongside curative treatments at any stage of a serious illness. She also highlighted how the palliative care team works closely with patients, families, and other providers to help manage symptoms, support decision-making, and ensure care aligns with each patient's goals.

Whether you're living with a chronic condition, facing a new diagnosis, or caring for a loved one with a serious illness, the UPMC Western Maryland Palliative Care Clinic offers compassionate support every step of the way.
