September is a very busy birthday month for our family! Over the weekend we celebrated my husband’s birthday and he wanted peach cobbler with Blue Bell ice cream (IYKYK), instead of cake. As I was making the cobbler, some intrusive thoughts ran through my head about calories, grams of sugar, and what I “don’t need” and it started to take the joy out of making something special for him.
So, I gave myself a talking to and reminded myself that his birthday is once a year, we eat healthy and balanced meals most of the time, food isn’t bad or good, and celebrating with him instead of from the sidelines is more important than a few extra calories or grams of sugar.
Here are a few guidelines I practice that may be helpful for you too!
When you are trying to improve your health habits:
🧁 you can still celebrate without guilt
📈 you don’t have to earn your calories (or birthday cake or anything)
🥦food is not inherently bad or good - it’s more nuanced than that.
🙅♀️That piece of cake is not a “cheat” and you’re not being bad.
Focus your habits on eating 85% of meals that are balanced, whole, nutrient dense foods. And 15% of meals that have a little more flexibility. This is where you can celebrate, have the cake (or cobbler), and feel less restriction. This will also help your habits stick because you’re not feeling deprived at every single meal.
What does that look like? If you’re eating 21 meals each week (3 meals a day, for 7 days), then 18 of those meals are your healthy, whole food, nutrient dense meals. And you have 3 meals where you can be a little more flexible - like celebrating a special occasion!
And I’m here if you need help getting started or fine-tuning your health plan!
