There can be so much fear in the eating disorder recovery process. Fear often keeps individuals from moving forward. They want to stick with what feels safe, comfortable and familiar, though that is also the thing keeping them in bo***ge.

Oftentimes, someone with an eating disorder experiences two different flows of thoughts, competing for attention: 1. Healthy, authentic self thoughts that align with their values and 2. The rigid, rules of the eating disorder offering false promises. This is the voice of truth and the voice of the enemy.

It feels easier to follow the rigid rules of the eating disorder because that seems safe, comfortable and predictable.

But true healing happens when leaning into the fear and discomfort.

Many people falsely assume that they’ve done something wrong if they experience anxiety or guilt with their eating versus viewing the fear, anxiety or guilt as something to be leaned into, an indicator that they are in fact going against their eating disorder.

In time and with repetition, that fear slowly begins to fade as the ED voice becomes more and more quiet.

You have a choice. To do the thing that feels safer now and keeps you in bo***ge or to lean into the fear which leads to freedom.
