High achievers, this episode is for YOU. 🎯

If you struggle with taking a day off, feel guilty when you miss a workout, or think one missed day means you’ve failed, it’s time to rethink how you build habits.

On this episode of Wellness Your Way, Dr. Heather McKee shares why missing a day isn’t a setback. It’s a normal part of creating habits that actually last.

Consistency isn’t about being perfect. Learn how to keep showing up, even when life doesn’t go according to plan. đŸ€

Before starting iron supplementation, I’d want to know my ferritin AND my full iron panel, not just whether my hemoglobin was normal. đŸ©ž

Here’s why: hemoglobin measures the protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen, while ferritin reflects your body’s stored iron. It’s possible to have normal hemoglobin levels while your iron stores are low.

An iron panel provides additional insight into how iron is circulating and being transported throughout your body.

The takeaway? Normal hemoglobin doesn’t automatically mean your iron status is optimal. Understanding your ferritin, iron panel, and complete blood count can help you make more informed decisions about whether iron supplementation is appropriate.

Test first. Supplement intentionally.

Your lab’s reference ranges are based on the average population getting tested at that lab. This is why ranges can vary from lab to lab. But I don’t know about you
I don’t want to settle for average based on the health of our current population.

The Complete Blood Count (CBC) is an important part of your annual labs, especially when evaluating acute disease. But it’s also an extremely basic, inexpensive test (often under $10). Don’t assume that a long list of numbers means you’re getting an extensive picture of your health.

It’s never about one number. It’s always about the pattern.

When I look at labs, I can often start to see a story unfold almost instantly. Is someone underfueled and overstressed? Eating a Standard American Diet? Experiencing perimenopause? The clues aren’t coming from one marker alone, but from the patterns across multiple markers.

The goal isn’t just to be “within range.” It’s to understand what your labs are telling you about your health.

You don't need a perfect anti-inflammatory diet. You need consistent habits that support your body:

Protein + plants + healthy fats + fiber + movement + sleep + stress management.

Want to lower inflammation? Start with the basics.

Everyone talks about having “high cortisol,” but did you know cortisol can also be TOO LOW?

Cortisol is a hormone you need for energy, blood sugar regulation, immune function, and your body’s stress response.

And contrary to what you may have heard, cortisol is supposed to rise in the morning. This natural morning rise is called the cortisol awakening response and helps your body wake up and feel alert.

That’s a GOOD spike, not the same thing as a cortisol spike from immediately checking your phone, rushing to work, or dealing with something stressful.

3 signs your cortisol may be too low:
→ Feeling exhausted or sluggish in the morning, even after enough sleep
→ Low energy or difficulty staying alert throughout the day
→ Feeling lightheaded or weak, especially when standing up

Your hormones aren’t meant to be “flat.” Healthy cortisol has a rhythm and timing matters.

Whether it’s for the caffeine, for the flavor, or for the ritual (or all 3!), having coffee ☕, tea đŸ«–, or matcha đŸ” is important to many.
