One of the things I pay attention to early on in couples therapy is when two people walk into my therapy room side by side but are in very different places in their heart and mind when it comes to change.

Couples often enter therapy wanting the relationship to improve, but they may not be equally ready for change. This article explores how the Stages of Change model can help couples therapists understand readiness, emotional safety, and progress in the therapy process.

We all have blind spots, especially in relationships. Sometimes the patterns keeping us stuck are the very ones we struggle to see in ourselves. In my latest article, I explore how blind spots can show up in conflict, accountability, boundaries, and even healing after infidelity, and why becoming willing to see ourselves more clearly can open the door to real transformation.

When clients ask this question, I often tell them:

✔ It is not about how broken things feel. It is about whether both partners are still willing to rebuild something intentional and lasting

✔ Emotional safety is not automatic. It is created through how you speak, respond, and repair after conflict

✔ Many couples stay stuck in cycles they cannot see. Blind spots keep both partners feeling justified, yet misunderstood

✔ One person cannot carry a marriage alone. Real change requires shared effort, accountability, and humility

✔ If both partners are willing to do the work, even relationships on the brink can rebuild trust and connection

But that change requires wanting the relationship more than you want out. It requires deciding that growth, accountability, and vulnerability are worth the discomfort they bring. Couples who are on the brink don’t need just any therapy.

This is a pivotal moment in their life. They need a specialist who understands high-conflict dynamics, attachment injuries, grief, betrayal, and the slow erosion that happens when couples stop feeling emotionally safe with one another.

When divorce feels like the only option left, high-conflict couples therapist and interpersonal conflict researcher Sileta Bell discusses how specialized couples therapy can interrupt painful cycles, rebuild emotional safety, and create real change for couples who still love each other and want thei...
