We have launched the fall version of the respiratory dashboard, which means the school absence and school air sampling data are back!

πŸ†•New this year is a page called β€œWhat else is going around," which shows less specific respiratory conditions, like pneumonia and bronchitis, but more specific age groups.

πŸ“ˆWe’re seeing flu start to come on the scene, following a national trend. Our partners at the Lungfish UW-Madison school air monitoring partnership are reporting flu in school air samples before October this year. In September, they found flu in air samples in 3 of 27 schools, compared to 0 in the same schools last year at this time.

🩹Get your flu shot now, as it’s looking like it’ll be an earlier flu season! Stay tuned on the latest data all season at publichealthmdc.com/data.

π—ͺ𝐑𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬π₯𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭?

An MMR vaccine costs Winnebago County $18.43. In 2025, Winnebago County gave out 36 vaccines for a cost of $663.48. Johns Hopkins researchers reported that in 2025, each measles case cost around $43,200 or $58,600 with the public health response. During an outbreak, public health spends time and money on contact tracing, vaccination campaigns, and monitoring quarantines.

That's $15,400 per case for managing the outbreak.

Or that could be $554,400 if those 36 people had decided not to get the vaccine and ended up with measles. Up from $663.30 for the cost to Winnebago County.

36 people with measles? $2.1 million total. Wisconsin is currently at 258 cases.
