🍯 Fighting a nighttime cough? Try honey first.
If your child is over 1 year old and battling a cough from a cold, a spoonful of honey may help more than you'd think — and more than many drugstore cough syrups.
**What the science says:**
A large review of 6 studies in nearly 900 children found that honey:
âś… Eases cough and helps kids (and tired parents!) sleep better than no treatment
âś… Works better than the antihistamine diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
âś… Works about as well as dextromethorphan (DM), a common cough-syrup ingredient
âś… May shorten how long a cough lasts
Leading expert groups agree honey is a reasonable, low-cost option for cough from the common cold in kids.
**How to use it:**
🥄 About 1/2 to 2 teaspoons (2.5–10 mL) by mouth, as needed — a dose before bed can calm nighttime cough. Give it straight or stir into warm (not hot) water.
**⚠️ One critical safety rule:**
đźš« NEVER give honey to a baby under 12 months. It can cause infant botulism, a serious illness.
**Also good to know:**
• Most over-the-counter cough and cold medicines aren't recommended for young children — they offer little benefit and carry real risks.
**See a doctor if** the cough lasts more than a week, keeps coming back, or comes with fever, trouble breathing, or your child seems very unwell.
💛 Simple, cheap, and backed by research — honey is worth a try.
