I get this question all the time, especially from students during my training:
“How long should we stimulate the lymph nodes before starting Manual Lymphatic Drainage?”
And yes, many of us were taught that we need to “activate” or “wake up” the lymph nodes before starting a session.
But here’s my question:
What exactly are we activating?
Why are we trying to switch ON something that’s already working?
I’ve asked several lymphatic drainage mentors and professors this very question over the years:
“Does it actually make sense to press on lymph nodes to wake them up before starting a massage?”
And the answer has always been unanimous:
No. Because lymph nodes are not buttons.
Your lymphatic system is already working. Collecting lymphatic vessels generate spontaneous contractions, even when you’re resting.
Now, preparing lymphatic pathways for a specific clinical purpose is one thing. Claiming that we’re switching the lymph nodes ON is something completely different.
Just because we were taught to do something doesn’t mean we shouldn’t question why.
Let’s think outside the box.
What were you taught? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
