I hurt myself at the gym, and it handed me the exact thing I teach.

I jumped into Chad's workout at his level, not mine, because it looked fun. A month later I was in physical therapy, learning it the hard way. So here is the good news I came back to tell you. It does not take a lot to make a difference. Start at your level. Lift enough to make it hard while you keep your form, and build from there. That is how you build muscle. Then let your food do its job, because it builds and maintains what your training starts. You need both, working together, and that is exactly what most people were never shown.

Whether you are navigating a GLP-1 journey or you have just been trying to make healthy habits actually stick in real life, this is the gap I built The Habit Compass to close. Not more information. Real support that holds for the long haul.

So here is your next step. Let's chat. The link is in the first comment. Come tell me where you are right now, and we will map the version of this that finally sticks for you.

You are not behind, and you are not starting from zero. You are starting from right where you are, and that is more than enough to build something that lasts.

Here's a small one that will save you a lot of grief this month: don't buy the Halloween candy yet.

That giant bag that shows up in every store on October 1st is a bit of a trap, and not because there's anything wrong with candy. It's a trap because it ends up in your house for a full month. You grab it "for the trick-or-treaters," and by the middle of October you've eaten most of it and bought a second bag, feeling a little defeated about the whole thing.

That is not a willpower problem. Nobody keeps a bag of candy at arm's reach for three weeks and never dips in. You're human, and it was right there.

So go all in on the parts of Halloween that make it fun. Put the decorations out, get the little ghosts on the porch, enjoy every bit of it. Just keep the candy at bay until right before the big night. You still get the whole holiday. You simply skip the three weeks of grazing that start before October even gets going.

Whether you're navigating a GLP-1 journey or you've just been trying to make healthy habits actually stick in real life, this is exactly the kind of small shift that holds.

After 2 decades of doing this work, I can tell you the wins that last are almost always the quiet ones like this.

Okay, can we be real for a sec.

Chad asked me the other day how my skin didn't go all droopy after I lost 65 pounds. And it hit me that this is probably the thing a lot of you are quietly worried about too. You want the weight gone. You don't want to be left loose and deflated.

So here's the honest truth, no filter. I'm 58. I have wrinkles. It's not as tight as it was in my 20s, and I lost the weight on a GLP. I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

This is just my experience, not medical advice. Your body and your journey are yours and your doctor's.

But my skin held far better than it had any right to, and it came down to three things I did on purpose the whole way down.

Protein first, at every meal, because your skin is built from protein.
Moving with resistance, because the muscle underneath is what fills your skin back out.
Hydration, because healthy skin is hydrated skin.

No cream fixes this after a real loss. It gets built from the inside, while the weight is still coming off.

You're not doing this alone, and that's the whole point of this room. So tell me, what's the part of the weight coming off that worries you most? I read every comment. And if you want to talk it through one on one, I do a 20 minute Zoom, just say the word and I'll send you the link.

With intention,
April

One of the most useful tools in my kitchen costs pennies. It's a paper bag.

Here's why it earns the counter space. Instead of hunting for perfectly ripe fruit at the store, I grab it firm on purpose and let a paper bag finish the job at home. It buys a couple extra days too, so the fruit is ripe when you're ready for it instead of everything at once.

And it works on more than avocados. Peaches, nectarines, mangos, pears, anything that keeps ripening after it's picked. One bag, and you're running the timeline instead of the fruit running you.

What's the one fruit you've left at the store because it wasn't ripe?

Reading a food label shouldn't take an hour. For a long time, it did for me. Standing in the aisle, box in hand, reading the back, trying to figure out if it was telling the truth.

Most of what gets handed to people is cookie-cutter, a "solution" built for a stranger, not for your body or the way your family actually eats.

So April built the thing she needed. On Saturday, August 15, she's teaching all of it, live, at The Real Life Reset: Decoding the Grocery Store.

Not a webinar you half-watch with another tab open. A half-day virtual retreat, live on Zoom, cameras on, in a small group, working through it together.

Here's everything your seat includes:

🧭 The 4 Simple Steps to take before you go to the grocery store, in your inbox the second you sign up. The steps that save time and money every single week, before you even leave the house.

πŸ›’ A grocery store cheat sheet that walks you through the label quickly, so you can make the healthy call and keep moving, never standing there guessing again.

πŸ” How to spot the sugar, hiding under 60-some different names most of us walk right past.

🏷️ Your decoder for the claims and the seals on the front of the box, so the friendly-looking packaging stops fooling you.

πŸ““ The Real Life Reset workbook, yours to keep.

▢️ The full replay. If life happens on the 15th, you lose nothing. It's yours to watch on your time.

And it doesn't matter how you eat. Paleo, carnivore, plant based, fasting, medical weight loss. We all stand in that same aisle. This is for every one of us.

Because reading a label was never the finish line. It's the habits you build around it that finally hold, until it's just who you are in the store.

All of it, $47.

The word on the front did the selling. The back tells the truth. It works the same on yogurt, granola, and bread, not just cereal.

The cheapest grocery trip is the one you shop from your own kitchen first.

Before you head to the store, there's one step that saves time, cuts waste, and keeps money from walking out the door. Take inventory. Open the fridge, the freezer, the pantry, and ask what you can build a meal around before buying anything new.

Most people skip it and come home with three of the same thing and a fridge that still feels empty. It's a small habit that changes the whole trip.

It's step one of four worth knowing before you go. Details are in the first comment.

The cheapest upgrade in any kitchen isn't a gadget or a specialty ingredient. It's a handful of fresh herbs.

A plain chicken thigh is a plain chicken thigh. The same thigh with fresh herbs, good oil, and a squeeze of lemon tastes like you spent hours on it. You didn't. That's the whole trick with eating well at home: a few small moves make simple food taste like effort, without the effort.

Case in point. A balcony full of overgrown herbs became a five-minute marinade for the chicken and a quick pan sauce spooned right over the top. One trim, one dinner, almost no work.

Both recipe cards are right here in the post, so swipe through and save them for your next slow cooking night.

What's the one ingredient that always makes your cooking taste better? Tell me below.

P.S. I left something for you in the comments.

A decision made in advance beats a negotiation in the moment. Every time.

On the Appalachian Trail this week, the plan was one mile up, then turn around. At 0.75 miles, uphill the entire way, the internal negotiation started right on cue: this is far enough, this counts.

But the decision wasn't being made on the hill. It was made at the trailhead, when everything was calm. So there was nothing to debate. You said one mile.

This is what behavioral science calls an implementation intention, and it's the same skill that works at a party, a restaurant, or a grocery store aisle. Decide once, when you're calm. Then the hard moment doesn't get a vote.

I left you something in the comments.

Where in your week would one decision made in advance change the outcome?

A habit that only works at home isn't finished yet.

This week I'm on a porch in the Smoky Mountains, far from my kitchen, my routine, and my usual grocery store. And the habits came with me. Not because I packed discipline, but because somewhere along the way they stopped being things I do and started being who I am.

That's the real test of any habit. Not whether it survives a perfect week. Whether it survives a different one.

The view helps too. Rest isn't a break from the work. It's where the work settles in.

What's one habit of yours that travels everywhere with you?
