Listen - I’m team what you want for your birth - including epidurals or not. Don’t want one? Great. Not sure? Also great. THIS IS FOR ALL OF YOU hoping for that v@ginal birth.

📌 ONE: MOVE, MOVE, MOVE.

Stand. Sit. Sway. Use a birthing ball. Walk the halls. Sit in the tub. Bring a birth ball in the shower. Hands and knees. Sit on a stool while you watch an HP marathon (I never left those rooms - the best 🙌🏼).

Gravity. Movement. Some of THE most basic things and they can change SO MUCH. When you move, your pelvis moves. When your bdoy moves, you make space. When you do all that - baby moves.

And a baby that can move is a baby that is not stuck and that is what you want.

➡️ Time for that epi you’re wanting? - great. Tell your RN you’d like to be moved to a new position every 30 mins or so, so “please come in and help me do that!” Don’t stop moving. And same if you’re pushing too! Doesn’t feel great and baby not coming down? Move!

📌 TWO: BREATHE!!!

Yes, your lungs know how to breathe. But not in the way you need them to during labor.

There is a REALLY good (like 100%) chance that you will be in moments in birth where it hurts, where you feel panicky, when the pressure gets huge, when we’re cramping after birth, or…

Controlled breathing = your rest/chill system kicking on and your fight or flight turning down = less stress, less tension, and less pain and = happier you.

I promise you - knowing how to calm yourself down, to get up, over, and through a contraction or a moment of pain WILL serve you. Practice the breathing patterns at home, for a minute or so, and get a feel for what that control feels like.

Breathing was the only tool I’ve used (aside from movement/staying out of bed) in all 4 of my births - and it works. Does it have to be your only tool? Nope. But do you need it? 1000000%.

This one is for all the girlies who are pretty sure they want the epidural - but want to know what it might mean when they say “yes, let’s do it!”

(Also - since no one can get it immediately, make sure you’ve got some pain mgmt tools to be using while you wait)!

If you’re new here, hi, I’m Lo! I’m a labor and mom/baby nurse, lactation counselor, and mama x 4. If you’re pregnant, mommin’, or are prepping for birth, postpartum, or breastfeeding, stick around, particularly if you’re NOT into the “you’re wrong, I’m right, this is the best way” type of mom content. This space is definitely for you. ♥️

And if you want to do some easy prepping and planning right now? Comment 3PACK and I can send you my third trimester pack to help you do that! Just make sure you’re following along.

It really could save your life. One minute. Once a month. Pick a day (Not when you’re on your 🩸 (if you still have one)) - and repeat.

It’s not just lumps. ➡️ Check for thickening. Unusual discharge. Changes in the size or shape that don’t make sense. Changes to the skin, like dimpling or puckering. Changes to the nips like inversion or movement in position. Persistent or localized pain that has no explanation. Swelling in your underarm lymph nodes.

You’re not too young. Don’t take a pass if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

You can do this 🩷

Pushing could be a short stage, could be loooong…but here’s what you should know!

1. Technically, the pushing stage is your 2nd stage of labor - which you hit when you are 10 cm dilated…BUT - see no. 02. ⬇️

2. Just because you’re 10 cm, you don’t have to start pushing. Look into “passive descent” - which is essentially when you wait for an urge to start pushing. Pros and cons (but TBH, I love it for A LOT of patients).

3. Pushing in side-lying is a GREAT way to reduce your risk of tears/episiotomy. Got an epidural and a bit less mobile? Get on your side!

4. Pushing on your back is physiologically not great - but if you end up liking it or feeling strong there, you can def do it (just like I did and loved, no shame!)

5. MOTION IS LOTION! True Iabor, still true in pushing! When you move, your pelvis moves AND that makes space!

6. When you hit that ring of fire moment, SLOW DOWN if you can. If you can let those tissues stretch and go slow, that is 👌🏼.

7. You can do closed or open glottis pushing - and again, there are pros to each. YOU CHOOSE AND TRY what you want, ok?

8. Pushing can be done in minutes or it can take hours (3+ hours in some cases). When you and baby are doing okay and making progress, you don’t HAVE to stop just because you hit the 3 hour mark.

9. Pushing might actually feel like a relief. A lot of my patients liked it more than laboring, because it felt like you could actually DO something.

10. When your baby gets close, you can do things like feel their head or ask for a mirror. Don’t want that? Great - skip it. But if you do and it isn’t offered? Ask!

Birth is so much more than bringing a baby into the world. It changes YOU, your relationships, and your identity. Dr. Britta Bushnell Britta Bushnell, PhD , author of Transformed by Birth, shares so much wisdom in this episode about childbirth as a rite of passage, how to prepare for it, how to move through it, and why that transformation continues long after birth.

Comment E74 for the episode ♥️

Gah, I could chat with her all day long.
