Physical activity is one of the six pillars of lifestyle medicine, what does that look like for our health?

Regular physical activity is defined as 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week and 2 days of strength training per week. Aerobic activity is anything that raises your heart rate for a sustained period of time, such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, and dancing.

Regular physical activity has multiple benefits, including:
- Weight management, especially when combined with balanced nutrition
- Improved mood
- Decreased risk of heart disease and stroke
- Reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes
- Decreased risk of developing certain cancers, including bladder, breast, colon, endometrial, esophageal, kidney, and stomach cancer
- Improved bone health, reducing risk of osteoporosis
Increased independence and decreased fall risk for older adults

Chronic stress is associated with poor health, including poor mental health, sleep problems, and heart disease, but how can you reduce your stress?

There is no simple fix for chronic stress, but stress management tools can be a good starting point while you work to build long-term coping tools and to decrease the amount of stress in your life. Some simple habits to try include:
- Find healthy ways to relax, such as yoga and deep breathing
- Find an outlet, talk to a friend or write in a journal about your stress
- Limit screen time, especially on social media
- Avoid reliance on substances to relax
- Seek professional help if stress feels unmanageable
- Don’t neglect the other 5 pillars of lifestyle medicine: restorative sleep, balanced nutrition, physical activity, positive social connections, and avoidance of risk substances

Stress management is one of the six pillars of lifestyle medicine, what does that look like for our health?

When our bodies are stressed, they release hormones that increase blood sugar, heart rate, and blood pressure, among other things, while slowing our digestion. This is helpful when we are running from a lion, but less so when worrying about our jobs or dealing with a mortgage. Modern life often comes with a host of stressors that, when dealt with for long periods of time, can have a negative impact on our health.

Chronic stress increases risk for:
- Mental health effects including anxiety, depression, and issues with memory and focus
- Digestive problems
- Poor immune function
- Muscle tension and pain
- Headaches
- Sleep problems
- Weight gain
- Cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, high blood pressure, and stroke

Stress management and reduction is an important contributor to our health. Tune in for Friday’s post, where we will discuss ways you can manage your stress for a healthier life

Whole Health Collaborative is a nurse-led lifestyle medicine program built for organizations serving underserved communities.

We embed directly into the community organizations people already trust and deliver group classes, one-on-one coaching, and clinical support across six pillars of health: nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, substance use, and connectedness.

Our participants leave with practical tools and measurable improvements in their health. Our partners gain a program that extends the impact of the work they are already doing.

If your organization is looking for a health partner that meets your community where they are, we would love to connect.
