This morning, while listening to 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia ia I was reminded of just how important it is to talk about the hard parts of life.
The Preston & Steve Show Preston, recently lost his mom and spoke openly about his experience, sharing why he wanted to be honest with his listeners. He knew someone listening might be going through something similar and could use the reminder that they weren't alone.
I may not have experienced the exact loss Preston has, but I have so much respect for his willingness to show up for his community in that way.
And it got me thinking about this past weekend. As the Education Chair for the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention (AFSP) Greater Philadelphia Chapter, I helped create and run the activities table at the Greater Philadelphia Out of the Darkness Walk.
But beyond the activities, what mattered most were the connections. Hearing people's stories. Meeting people who wanted to bring su***de prevention education into their own communities. Being reminded that we don't have to experience the same pain to show up for one another.
We may not share the same stories of hurt, loss, feeling misunderstood, or loneliness. But we can listen. We can relate in our own ways. We can remind one another that our stories matter, that there is support, and that we don't have to navigate life's hardest moments alone.
And I have to give the BIGGEST shout-out to, Andrea Ferrino, AFSP Walk Chair If there were a word beyond flawless, I'd use it to describe this weekend's walk. 😂💜
Andrea, the love, support, and sense of community you helped bring together were incredible. Thank you for all the work you put into making this event what it was!
To everyone who stopped by our table, shared a story, participated, volunteered, or helped spread hope: THANK YOU.
