Kidney health for all. Bridge of Life (BOL) is an international nonprofit organization working to improve health, wellness and vitality.

BOL has expanded its efforts beyond kidney care to include screening and prevention of chronic illnesses and increased access to primary care services. We strive to empower local staff, community health workers and patients through training and education to make sustainable changes to healthcare.

Early detection saves lives, and meeting people where they are makes all the difference! Through the Community Health Experience, Bridge of Life was proud to partner alongside DaVita, local YMCAs, and dedicated neighborhood organizations to bring free preventive health screenings and wellness services directly into Houston and Los Angeles communities.

Together, we screened nearly 1,000 individuals, identifying critical, often hidden risks for chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes, while connecting participants to onsite nephrologists and follow-up care.

“It’s going to transform her life.”

After meeting with a 23-year-old living with type 1 diabetes at a recent community health screening in Los Angeles, Dr. Mike Shomaker, one of Bridge of Life’s AMAZING volunteer Provider Educators, shared this reflection.

These conversations are at the heart of our work: helping people understand their health, recognize the steps they can take, and feel supported as they move forward.

What a time in LA! Over 670 people reached through amazing volunteers, incredible partners, and a community that showed up in force.

A special shout-out to the LA partners who hosted these events, connected us with their communities, and built a bridge to education, care, and support. And to DaVita Kidney Care’s Community Health Experience team for their incredible leadership, energy, and commitment to making this work possible!

So many meaningful connections and reminders of the power of education and support to change lives. Last Tuesday we had an incredible evening celebrating Bridge of Life's 20th Anniversary with those who love us most!

Huge thank you to our ICHD Nurse, Manny Castro, for training 100 clinicians and technicians in access examination, cannulation techniques, infection prevention, patient safety, clinical communication, and ultrasound use in the dialysis clinic!

With a 52-percentage-point increase in self-reported knowledge across core dialysis competencies, Bridge of Life is equipping local clinicians to better treat and protect their patients. This strong foundation paves the way for improved fluid removal and better health outcomes across Guatemala.
