AHIMA THROWBACK THURSDAY!

⏳ DID YOU KNOW? Our Profession Is Almost 100 Years Old! AHIMA turns 100 in 2028! How many of those years have YOU been part of the HIM profession?"

Let's travel back to 1928!

Long before electronic health records, computerized coding, or artificial intelligence, a group of dedicated medical record professionals helped establish what would eventually become AHIMA!

In 1928, the Association of Record Librarians of North America (ARLNA) was established with the support of the American College of Surgeons.

Grace Whiting Myers served as the association's first president.

Over the years, our professional association evolved:
1928 – Association of Record Librarians of North America
1938 – American Association of Medical Record Librarians
1970 – American Medical Record Association (AMRA)
1991 – American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)

Nearly a century later, our profession continues to evolve, embracing technology, data analytics, coding, privacy, compliance, and so much more!

A LITTLE THROWBACK TRIVIA!

Do you remember when AHIMA was called AMRA? Or when HIM professionals were known as Medical Record Librarians?

πŸ‘‡ Tell us how long you've been in the HIM profession and what it was called when you started!

HIM NEWS WEDNESDAY | IaHIMA

Good News for Rural Healthcare!

U.S. Senate Passes Healthcare Cybersecurity Legislation
Did you hear? On October 1, 2026, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the bipartisan Health Care Cybersecurity and Resiliency Act!

The legislation aims to strengthen cybersecurity across healthcare, with special attention to rural hospitals and under-resourced healthcare organizations.

πŸ” What's included?

βœ… Support for stronger cybersecurity protections
βœ… Proposed grant assistance for rural and under-resourced healthcare providers
βœ… Improved cybersecurity training and preparedness
βœ… Stronger protection of electronic patient health information
βœ… Improved sharing of information about cyber threats

Why does this matter to Iowa HIM professionals?
With so many rural hospitals and critical access hospitals throughout Iowa, protecting patient information while maintaining access to essential healthcare services is especially important.

πŸ”Ž **New ICD-10-CM Codes Are Here β€” But Are We Catching Everything?**

The FY 2027 ICD-10-CM updates took effect October 1, 2026, and HIM professionals are now putting those changes into practice!
