Help us spread the word in the month of October and celebrate Domestic Violence and Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month, but to do this we must know how this all began!
The History of Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from a grassroots initiative called the "Day of Unity", which was first observed in October 1981. Conceived by the [National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV)](https://nnedv.org/), the initial goal was simple yet profound: to connect advocates across the United States who were working to end violence against women and children.
The movement quickly gained momentum, transforming from a single day into a full week of local, state, and national activities. These initial events centered around three enduring themes that still define the month today:
* Mourning those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.
* Celebrating the strength, resilience, and victories of survivors.
* Connecting advocates and allies to create a unified front against abuse.
By October 1987, the first official, month-long National Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That same year marked another major milestone for survivor resources with the launch of the very first national toll-free domestic violence hotline. Recognizing the critical need to bring this issue out of the shadows, Congress officially designated October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989.
