ON THIS DAY — OCTOBER 22, 2022
Dollar Bay’s Amos Norland runs into the record book.

He thought he might break the school record by a couple of seconds.

He broke it by 21.

On this day in 2022, Dollar Bay senior Amos Norland won the U.P. Division 3 boys cross country championship in 16:44.18 at the Farmhouse course near Gladstone. Pickford’s Hayden Hagen finished second in 18:00.14—more than a minute behind him.

Norland credited steady pacing, interval work in practice, plenty of sleep and healthy eating in the days before the race. The preparation paid off with a U.P. title and a school record that exceeded even his own expectations.

A small school. A peninsula’s biggest stage. And a senior who saved something special for his final U.P. championship race.
