My 5 favorite things I’m doing NOW for my future brain health 🧠
Because I don’t want to wait until I’m 70 to start thinking about my brain.
👂 1. Protecting my hearing
Hence the Loop earplugs! Hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline and dementia risk, so when I know things are going to get LOUD, I protect my hearing.
🀄️ 2. Mahjong + social connection
Mahjong keeps me learning, strategizing, recognizing patterns and thinking ahead—but I love the social piece just as much.
Social isolation is associated with dementia risk. It’s one reason we intentionally host Mahjong at Unique Health Now. Especially during our LONG Illinois winters, sometimes supporting health means having somewhere to go, people to see, something new to learn and a reason to laugh around a table.
😴 3. Protecting my sleep
Sleep matters for brain health. And conditions that disrupt sleep—like sleep apnea—deserve to be identified and treated.
💪🏽 4. Creatine
I use creatine primarily to support muscle, but there’s also emerging research looking at its potential cognitive benefits. The evidence is still evolving, but it’s an area I’m watching.
🌸 5. Protecting my hormonal + metabolic health
For me, this means paying attention to my weight, maintaining muscle, exercising, eating well and keeping an eye on my health as I move through midlife and eventually menopause.
Hormone therapy may be appropriate for some women based on symptoms, timing, medical history and individual risks—but it isn’t something I personally use right now, nor is it prescribed simply to prevent dementia.
And THIS is why we practice medicine the way we do at Unique Health Now.
Brain health isn’t one pill or one lab value.
It’s hearing. Sleep. Muscle. Metabolic health. Hormones. Movement. Relationships. Learning.
I’m thinking about the brain I want at 70 while I’m still in my 30s. 🧠
And sometimes that looks like earplugs + a table full of Mahjong tiles. 👂🀄️
