Introduction to Tai Chi ☯️

Join us beginning on October 19 at Gypsy Hands Healing Arts Center and discover how Tai Chi cultivates grounding, balance, energy, awareness—and a deeper mind-body connection.

This eight-week experiential series, led by Jared Voelker, introduces foundational Tai Chi principles through guided exercises, partner work, breathwork, focused attention, Push Hands activities, and free play. Participants will learn how to work with these Tai Chi foundations in class and integrate them into everyday life.

The series is designed to be experienced as a whole, with participants practicing and integrating what they learn between sessions. Drop-ins are also welcome.

Cost:
$150 for the full eight-week series, or $23 per individual drop-in session. Participation in the full series is encouraged for the most complete introduction to the foundations of Tai Chi.

Dates:
Mondays: October 19—December 7, 2026 at Gypsy Hands

Time:
6:00—7 p.m.

To register:
Please email Jared Voelker at [email protected]

(Payment can be made by cash, check, or Venmo.)

Jared Voelker is a licensed school counselor who has studied Chinese martial arts since 2004 and Tai Chi under Richard Clear since 2011. He earned his school counseling license in 2015 and has since worked with students across age groups and school settings, supporting academic achievement, social-emotional development, and career exploration. His work as a counselor and his study of Tai Chi have naturally informed one another, deepening his approach to teaching, awareness, and well-being. Jared is particularly interested in both the healing and martial dimensions of Tai Chi and enjoys sharing the principles and training that have had a meaningful impact on his own life.

Francis Jide Akinnawo: “About Spiraling”
Opening Reception
FJ

Friday, October 2, 2026
5–9 p.m.

Francis Jide Akinnawo’s practice explores the human condition and the ways we drift away from ourselves. Moving from pencil and charcoal hyperrealism to expressive portraiture, he uses the face and body as sites for storytelling. His recent work examines distraction through grief, politics, mental illness, heartbreak, technology, anxiety, and other forces that distance us from presence. Exaggerated googly eyes and tightly wound yarn spirals suggest hypnosis, repetition, and cycles of fixation. Influenced by Byung-Chul Han’s The Burnout Society, he considers overstimulation, productivity, and self-imposed exhaustion. Through repetitive mark-making, layering, winding, and slowing down, his work resists immediacy, functioning as a form of reflection and therapy.

Francis Jide Akinnawo is a multidisciplinary visual artist and art director whose practice spans painting, performance, and cultural advocacy. With over six years of professional experience, he has presented two solo exhibitions: “Essence: Exploring Self, Society and Humanity” (2021) and “Through Darkness, Shining Light” (2024). His imaginative visual language and socially engaged practice explore the complexities of the human condition, identity, and contemporary life. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Lagos and is currently pursuing an MFA in Fine and Studio Arts (Painting & Drawing) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Circle of the Sacred Feminine 🌹
Join us at Gypsy Hands Healing Arts Center on Sunday, September 20, for Circle of the Sacred Feminine, a guided gathering designed to help participants reconnect with their voices, energy, intuition-and inner sense of strength.
Facilitated by Wendy Smith and Susie Dew, the circle will include energy work, breathwork, reflection, and open conversation. The gathering is intended for women who want to build community, take time for self-care, and share sisterhood-listening to themselves and exploring connection with one another through reflection and conversation.
The gathering will move between introspective moments and group exchange: connecting with the breath, the physical body, and the energy body; engaging in practices such as an energy ball exercise; and using the voice for somatic release through sound.
Participants will have the opportunity to speak and listen in the larger group and pairs or trios-creating connection. Time will be held at the close for informal conversation.
Wendy Smith is a Reiki master, yoga instructor, and energy worker who believes in the power of presence, healing, and the divine light.
Susie Dew is a wellness practitioner whose work includes functional nutrition, herbalism, breathwork, and shamanic energy healing. She is devoted to helping women reconnect with their bodies, intuition, and wisdom.
This is not a seminar or lecture, but a safe space to participate, to be heard, and to grow through shared experience and wisdom.
Wendy and Susie provide guidance, helping maintain balance so that each participant has the opportunity to be witnessed, while also offering tools that can support daily life.
Wendy and Susie will guide participants through an experience of reflection, connection, and discovery, with room to contribute-and leave feeling more grounded.
Koha (Donation): $30 (Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.)
To Register: Please email Wendy Smith at [email protected]

Charles McTyere Parker: Material Witness
Closing Reception
Charles McTyere Parker

Friday, September 4, 2026
5–9 p.m.

In Material Witness, Charles McTyere Parker’s work rejects the passive surface. Operating within the style of material abstraction, his practice relies on a physical dialogue with found and repurposed materials — textiles, paper, and occasionally paint—that remain visibly in flux. Rather than offering a transparent window onto the world, Parker treats the work as a site of documentation, layering texture, depth, and everyday artifacts to explore themes of isolation, memory, and structural decay. The result is an introspective, tactile experience where the boundary between the medium and the message dissolves.

Charles McTyere Parker is a Memphis native who has lived and worked in Knoxville since 2022. He creates his work from his Old City loft, which serves as his studio, gallery, and the home he shares with his son, Jude. For years, Parker has been involved with the close-knit Memphis filmmaking community, and he recently completed shooting his directorial debut short film, Sketch for Summer, on location in Memphis at the end of July.
