I am so grateful that women's health through perimenopause and menopause is finally a hot topic! 🙌 For far too long, many women have been told to "just push through it." Hopefully all this celebrity press will push mainstream medicine and insurance to catch up.
In a recent conversation, Oprah sat down with menopause expert Dr. Mary Claire Haver, and this short segment is a must-watch. 👇
Dr. Haver shared research showing that women who combined hormone therapy (HRT) with a GLP-1 medication did better than women on a GLP-1 alone. A Mayo Clinic study found postmenopausal women lost about 30% more weight using hormone therapy alongside tirzepatide than those taking the drug alone. The HRT group lost an average of 19.2% of their body weight compared to 14.0%, and more women hit meaningful weight-loss goals. The combination was also linked to better cardiometabolic outcomes.
The research is still early. This was an observational study, so researchers can't yet say HRT caused the extra weight loss, and they plan to test it in a randomized clinical trial. Still, it's a big deal that this conversation is happening at all.
If you're in perimenopause or menopause and feel like your body changed overnight, you are not crazy and you are not alone. Talk to your provider about all of your options. 💜 This is a combination I have been offering my patients for many years.
