Subj: Fat-Burning Secret

Everyone seems to be looking for the “next big thing” when it comes to losing fat.
The next trick, tip or hack will cause the fat cells to melt away.
I’ve got news for you …
You won’t find this “next big thing” at the supplement store.
You won’t find it at the cardio party bootcamp.
You won’t find it on the exercise bike or treadmill.
That’s because the only fat-burning secret that works is the oldest one in the books.
It’s also the simplest.
Strength training.
Just lift weights, bro :-)
If you want a sturdy, durable, pain-free and lean body, then following a well-designed strength training program with progressive overload in mind is the best way to get there.
What’s progressive overload?
It just means that you can’t make progress by lifting the same weights for the same number of sets and reps in perpetuity.
To make progress, it’s necessary to vary the stimulus.
And we can do this by adding more weight … increasing range of motion … adding tempo and pauses … or even adding band resistance to your lifts.
How you do all of that is up to you and your coach (and hopefully, you have a coach … because you’ll get better results a lot faster if you do).
But there’s one rule that will always hold true.
The treadmill is the road to nowhere when it comes to having a strong, lean, durable body that’s resistant to aches and pain.
Just lift weights.

Subj: It’s A Trap

Losing 20 pounds in 6 weeks was probably the most famous fitness promotion of all time.
It worked … to a point.
Did people lose 20 pounds – or more – in just 6 weeks?
Yup … they sure did.
But in many cases, one of the following – or both – happened:
1. The 20 pounds came back
2. Injuries
You see, losing weight with an extreme exercise regimen and/or a starvation diet can and will melt off the pounds in a pretty short amount of time. But since these activities aren’t sustainable, the weight has a tendency to come right back.
Also, these types of programs are focused on one thing: weight loss. And more than that, they’re focused on a specific amount of weight loss in a specific amount of time.
What they’re not focused on is injury prevention and joint health, which is what people should really want as they get older.
Wouldn’t a program that taught you how to exercise and eat sustainably – while building a strong foundation of bone density and joint health – be something you’d want?
I hope so … because that’s really the key to long-term success … and the very fact that you’re reading this newsletter means that you’re smarter than the average bear.
Something to think about as you decide what kind of fitness program is right for you.
The quick fix? Or the long game?
I know what I’d choose … 100% of the time.

Subj: Protein Shakes & Weight Loss

One of the questions I get most often is, “Can protein shakes help me lose weight?”
The answer is … it depends.
It depends on what your goal is.
A bodybuilder, for example, might manipulate her protein intake to pile on more muscle mass and keep overall calories in check to minimize stored body fat.
A 50-year-old dad who sits at a desk all day might have a protein shake after his evening strength workout … and then have a protein-containing dinner 2 hours later to build and preserve lean muscle mass.
The leaner muscle we have, the more effectively we can burn fat … especially as we age.
But there are a few things about protein intake that research has shown when it comes to weight loss:
Decreases hunger and appetite. By triggering the release of fullness hormones, protein can help you avoid the urge to reach for unhealthy snacks between meals
Supports healthy metabolism. According to this study, two groups were placed on a calorie-restricted diet … one high-protein, and one low-protein. After 6 weeks, the high-protein group gained 2.9 more pounds of muscle and lost 2.4 more pounds of fat than the low-protein group.
Supports fat loss … especially around your midsection. In a 12-week study, women with normal weight but high body fat followed either a high- or standard-protein diet. Those on the high-protein diet lost an additional 3 pounds of body fat and 1 inch in waist circumference.
Minimize regain after weight loss. A recent review suggests that you can minimize weight regain by following a high-protein diet in the first 3–12 months after losing weight.
So … do protein shakes help you lose weight? Well … yes and no.
Getting adequate protein intake each day has been shown to support healthy weight loss … especially around the belly … and minimize weight regain after a period of weight loss.
Including a liquid protein in your diet is an effective way to maximize your protein intake and double-down on the muscle-building switch in your body.
As with anything else, it depends on your goals … and how you execute your plan.

Subj: Post-Vacation Blues

Did you get off-track with your fitness goals during your summer vacation … and haven’t been able to get back in the groove?
This is very common, and I want you to know that you’re not alone.
Maybe you went a bit overboard on your vacation and added a few unwanted pounds.
What can we do to hit the reset button? What can you do to get a fresh start, get back into a routine and make some of that unwanted weight disappear?
Well, if you’re my kind of client, let’s start with what you don’t want.
Hours of endless cardio, extreme workouts, and starvation diets.
What most of my best clients really wanted when they started training with me was a simple, sustainable program based on gaining strength, improving flexibility, and avoiding pain. It turns out, once they learned these secrets, it was pretty much all they needed to look and feel better in their clothes, regain their confidence and motivation, and lose the negative mindset that held them back in the past.
Here’s a cheat sheet that may help you put the vacation blues in the rear-view mirror:
Focus on Strength Training. The stronger you get and the leaner mass you add, the more fat you burn. I’ve been saying that for years, but now there’s scientific evidence that backs it up. Focus on getting stronger. Not only will you burn more fat, but you’ll also be less susceptible to injuries.
Eat Enough Protein. Consuming the proper amount of lean protein keeps you feeling fuller for a longer period between meals, and protein also requires more energy (i.e. calories) for the body to process and absorb it. The easiest way to measure is to use your hand to determine your protein portions. For men, 2 palm-sized servings of protein per meal; for women, 1 palm-sized portion. And don’t try to cram 50 grams of protein into one meal. Your body can only digest and absorb protein a little at a time, so it needs a steady supply throughout the day.
Stop Starving Yourself: “Move more and eat less” isn’t always the answer. Many people get stuck in the cardio trap, spending hours on the treadmill and eating as little as possible. Then, they wonder why their muscle mass has disappeared, and they feel tired and hungry all the time. To perform at its best, your body needs fuel … protein, veggies, unprocessed carbs and healthy fats. Discover how you can subtract unwanted fat by adding necessary nutrients to your diet.
So, there’s a quick guide to a few simple things you can start doing today to make those lingering vacation pounds go away. Which one seems the most doable to you?

Subj: Happy Labor Day!
Today is Labor Day in the good ‘ol US of A … and I like to use this day to reflect on how thankful I am to do all the things I love.
I work with some amazing clients to help them live a happier, healthier life.
I’m fortunate to be in good physical and emotional health, and to be able to do all the things I enjoy without aches and pains stopping me.
Now, don’t get me wrong. That doesn’t mean I’ve got it all figured out. I’m human, and I have good days and bad days just like you.
The key is to make sure the good days outweigh the bad.
To me, Labor Day also marks the symbolic end of summertime and the unofficial start of fall.
The change of seasons is the perfect time to take stock of where you are and set some goals for your health and fitness in the fall.
Whether you’re thinking in 4-, 6- or 8-week increments, I can help you set a goal that’s realistic to achieve in that timespan.
Remember … a goal needs to be specific (i.e., we can measure whether we achieved it or not) and it needs to have a deadline.
But also, remember this: If you set a goal – let’s say, to lose 10 pounds in 8 weeks – and you didn’t achieve it by the deadline you set, it doesn’t mean you failed.
It just means you haven’t arrived at your destination yet.
So … as we shift from Summer to Fall, here’s what I’d like you to do.
Take stock of where you are with your health and happiness.
Set a specific goal with a deadline.
Start taking small actions consistently that move you closer to your goal.
Start behaving like someone who has already achieved the goal!
What’s something specific and timely you can begin pursuing today, and achieve in the next, say, 4-8 weeks?
Reply back and let me know. I’d love to help you achieve it.

Subj: When Should I Start?

Not to rush you through summer, but “Back to School” season is right around the corner.

And guess what I hear during “Back to School” season?

A lot of stories.

And when I say stories … I mean excuses.

Reasons to pause … or reasons not to start.

The funny thing about this kind of mentality is that it rolls with the seasons.

In my experience, there’s Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer … but Excuse Season is year-round.

The same people who told me there’s “not enough time to work out when the kids are home from school” … what do you suppose they’ll be telling me in September?

“There’s not enough time to work out when the kids are back in school.”

Don’t fall into this trap.

There is no perfect time. There is only today.

There is no better time or worse time.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.

The second best time is today.
