Tips for Producing enough Milk:
**Milk production is supply and demand. The more often you empty the breast, the more you make. So breastfeed often- at least 10 to 12 times in 24 hours- with newborns that can be every 1 to 2 hours sometimes. Cluster feeding and growth spurts mean frequent nursing. It won't always be this frequent, just in early weeks and months, and not all day. They have longer stretches of sleep.
**If there are issues with Milk transfer (tongue tie, preterm, not active at breast, etc) then you will need to pump after most feedings to build and maintain your milk supply). Make sure to get breastfeeding help, and ensure baby is getting weekly weight checks.
**Make sure baby is active at the breast. Newborns are sleepy so watch for swallowing. If baby falls asleep and is not feeding, wake them up.
**Start Early! The first 3 weeks of baby's life, you are setting up how much Milk you will make for the rest of the year- by how often you empty breast. So frequent nursing (pumping too if needed), are critical in early weeks to Producing enough Milk. If you are having problems, get Lactation help early!

"I DONT HAVE ENOUGH MILK!"
As a Lactation Consultant, the most common concern I hear from moms is worries about not having enough milk. The good news is that most mothers produce enough milk for their babies. Milk production is supply and demand, so the more often you empty the breast, the more milk you make! During growth spurts its normal for babies to act constantly hungry, nurse alot more often for 24 to 48 hours, act fussy, and breasts feel less full. Common times for growth spurts are during the first few days at home and around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months. Also it's very normal for babies to generally nurse often in the first month or 2...even every hour during cluster feeds. The common recommendation of feeding newborns every 3 hours is too long, 1.5 to 2 hours is more reasonable and baby should not be on a schedule but feed 10 to 12 times in 24 hours. As long as baby is gaining 5 to 7 ounces a week, then they are getting enough milk. There are some issues that can cause babies to be unable to get the milk that mother has, such as prematurity, sleepiness and tongue tie and pumping is necessary to build milk supply. If you have concerns, please call me. I have 12 years of experience helping breastfeeding moms overcome many issues. I can do a home visit. Call Katie at 410 463 1026

Are you or do you know someone who is having breastfeeding difficulties and their baby was "checked" for tongue ties by peeking in the mouth and dismissed or never checked at all? Or there are also "hidden" posterior ties. Tongue Ties can cause symptoms like reduced milk supply, poor milk transfer, painful latch, slow weight gain, reflux, popping off the breast, clicking and other issues. Doctors and nurses have good intentions but typically do not receive any training in college on how to check for tongue ties. Even many Lactation Consultants often do not get hands on, in person training on how to properly check for ties and assess oral function. My name is Katie Yockey and I am a Lactation Consultant who specializes in tongue and lip ties. I have been helping breastfeeding moms for 17 years and have tons of experience helping with hundreds of tongue tie assessments, oral, suck and feeding assessments, follow up, and referrals to excellent providers. I also have helped many moms overcome very diffucult breastfeeding issues, such as non latching babies, NICU infants, etc. I offer home visits- give me a call at 410-463-1026

Allergies? Spring flowers are blooming and many moms are dealing with allergies. But if you are breastfeeding, you dont have to suffer! Fortunately, Loratadine or Claritin is approved for use in breastfeeding moms. See medical studies on Lact Med website. But it's best to avoid any allergy meds with decongestants since they can reduce your milk. I am an experienced Lactation Consultant and have been helping moms overcome MANY diffucult breastfeeding issues for 17 years. I also specilize in helping with tongue ties. Please call me if you need help or have questions! I offer home visits on the Eastern shore of MD or DE and also have a home office in Dorchester County MD. I can provide full coverage with some insurances through Lactation Network. Katie: 410 463 1026.
