Your nervous system runs your gut. AND your gut affects your mental state. And unless your nervous system feels safe...your gut cannot do its job.
When your body is stuck in chronic fight or flight, digestion shuts down, stomach acid drops, enzymes decrease, gut motility slows and everything becomes reactive. And it does not matter how clean you eat or how many supplements you take because the problem is up the stream
This is why nervous system regulation HAS TO BE very first thing I work on with every client. Before we touch the gut directly or add anything (an herb, food etc)
And it does not have to look like breathwork or meditation! There are many other ways to take that much needed reset during the day.
Pattern interrupting chronic stress has to be intentional AND consistent. Your nervous system will not stand down on its own.
1) A walk without your phone means no input, no stimulation, no performing. Just you and whatever is around you. Your nervous system calms down when it finally gets a break from processing everything.
2) Sitting outside in silence is not meditation. It is just permission to stop producing for ten minutes. Watch what moves. People or bird watch.
3) Uninterrupted time with your pet means full presence with a creature who has no agenda and no expectations
4) Dancing to a song you love shifts your physiological state unbelievably quick. Let your body move without thinking about it
5) Belt out a song at the top of your lungs. Singing activates your vagus nerve through the vibration in your throat and chest
6) Cooking something from scratch with no screen nearby is regulating in a way that surprises people. It helps your body produce serotonin because it is repetitive, sensory, grounding...safe. Your hands are busy and your mind finally gets to quiet.
7) Soil! There is a bacteria in soil called Mycobacterium vaccae that triggers serotonin release on contact with your skin. Repot a plant or feet on the earth
