I became a dietitian because I believe in the power of nutrition. But I practice the way I do because I believe food is about so much more. What does food mean to me as a dietitian?
Of course, I understand the science of nutrition. I know the importance of vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fats, and how food supports our bodies.
But when I think about what food means to me, I also think about the meals shared with people I love. The recipes passed down through generations. Birthday cakes, holiday traditions, spontaneous ice cream trips, and conversations that happen around the dinner table.
I think about comfort, connection, culture, celebration, and joy.
Because food is more than fuel.
And while nutrition matters, so does everything else food brings to our lives.
As a dietitian, my goal isnât to help people eat perfectly. Itâs to help them build a relationship with food that allows room for both nourishment AND living.
Food is meant to nourish our bodies, but it can also nourish our lives.
