Shortness of breath—also called dyspnea—is the feeling that you cannot get enough air or catch your breath. It can have many possible causes, including heart and lung conditions such as lung cancer.

Lung cancer may interfere with breathing when a tumor narrows an airway, fluid builds up around the lungs, or the disease affects healthy lung tissue. New, persistent, or worsening shortness of breath should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Sudden or severe breathing difficulty may require immediate medical attention.

October is Healthy Lung Month—a reminder to understand your risks and pay attention to changes in your breathing.

A persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or coughing up blood should not be ignored. Smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer, but asbestos, radon, secondhand smoke, and certain workplace substances can also increase risk.

Talk with your healthcare provider about your health history, potential exposures, and whether lung cancer screening may be appropriate for you: https://www.lungcancercenter.com/lung-cancer/early-screening/

An asbestos-related lung cancer diagnosis can leave families with questions about medical bills, lost income, and their legal rights.

Several forms of compensation may be available, depending on where and how the exposure occurred. However, every case is different, and filing deadlines vary by state and type of claim. An experienced asbestos attorney can review a person’s exposure history and explain their options.

According to the National Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men and women and causes about 20% of all cancer deaths. However, stage I lung cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms because the tumor is still limited to the lung. Some early-stage cancers are discovered through lung cancer screening or imaging performed for another medical concern.
