Conversations with Stone Medicine: Howlite
Howlite is a soft white stone with fine gray veins, often called the stone of calm. It was first described in 1868 by Henry How, a Canadian geologist, and it is named after him. Today it comes mostly from California.
Why we use Howlite for the Fall Element
In the Five Element tradition, fall belongs to the Metal element, which governs the Lungs and the Large Intestine. White is the color of Metal, and white stones are traditionally used to support its themes: clear, steady breath, clarity of mind, and the ability to let go. As the season asks us to release what no longer serves us, Howlite helps keep us calm and patient while we do it.
How to use it
Meditation and breathwork: Hold Howlite in your palm as you breathe slowly in and out. Let each exhale soften your shoulders and quiet your thoughts.
Rest: Keep a stone on your nightstand or under your pillow to support a calm mind before sleep.
Wear it: A pendant or pair of earrings keeps Howlite close to you throughout the day.
Pair it: Howlite works well with amethyst for deeper calm, and with clear quartz to amplify its energy.
Spiritual benefits
Quiets an overactive mind and eases worry and stress.
Encourages patience, especially with ourselves and others.
Supports calm, thoughtful communication.
Linked to the crown chakra, it is said to open the way for clarity and spiritual awareness.
Helps us release old emotions and make room for peace.
Caring for your Howlite
Howlite is a soft, porous stone. Wipe it with a soft, damp cloth, and avoid soaking it or using harsh chemicals. Store it apart from harder stones so it doesn’t get scratched. To recharge it, rest it on a piece of selenite overnight.
A note for shoppers: Howlite is often dyed blue and sold as turquoise. Natural Howlite is white with gray veins, so buy from a source you trust.
