Today I am honored to share these pictures of a massive gumbo limbo tree at Estero River Park right beside the new pedestrian bridge. I think it’s the biggest “tourist tree” I’ve seen!
reminder: The park is open Fri-Sun 7 AM-6 PM. Park north of the river. Turn at County road to get to the parking lot and walk across the Estero River.
update on progress:
1. The village contracted with a company to kill the invasive exotic plants. You will notice vast areas of standing dead brush. It was all Ceasar w**d and, as much as I dislike spraying, it is the only realistic way I think there is to try to restore a natural balance on this beloved land. Other than fire, that is!
2. This week or next they will start creating 3 paths through Ellen’s land. While this will be difficult for me to see, I see it as a good thing because one of the many wonderful things about Ellen was her intent to be sure people are able to be in nature on our public lands!
3. FGCU students will be at the Center again on the 24th.
4. The current plan is for the entire park to be open in January of 2027. Be patient! (It’s hard for me to do!)…

I took the dogs to Estero River Park again this Sunday. I may have gone overboard taking photos of trees and shadows! But I wanted to share with Happe people! Look close and you can see the eagle’s nest.
There are also some glimpses of Ellen’s place.
The park is open Friday-Sunday 7 AM to 6 PM. It’s worth a visit!
Enjoy
PS you enter from the north side of the river.
There are small signs saying “Ester River Park” on 41 right at the fire station. Turn west on “County road” and follow it to the end..Highlands Ave. turn right into the parking lot.
There a lovely new bathroom, and then a giant pedestrian bridge. The west side of the property is open. It was previously called the College of Life property-maybe 32 acres. I don’t know how long the trail system is, but it’s lovely! Every time I go more people are walking there. Dogs are welcome on leash.

I took another Sunday morning walk at Estero River Park. If you haven’t been yet you are missing out!

Starting from the parking area you see this amazing meadow filled with blooming wildflowers. The image doesn’t do it justice. Then this majestic tree always takes my breath away!
There was a piliated woodpecker foraging on one of the standing dead pines that I didn’t even try to take a picture of: rather I enjoyed the moment!
Èllen’s land isn’t open yet. It’s giving me a chance to learn more of the park.

The park is open Friday-Sunday 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Parking is on the north side of the river. Turn onto county road at the fire station, turn right onto Highlands and continue to the parking lot.

🌿💚 What a wonderful day in nature!

On August 26, 2026, Tish Reid welcomed a local Girl Scout troop to the historic Girl Scout House for some time outdoors with friends. It was so nice to see their enthusiasm, curiosity, and excitement as they enjoyed the beauty of nature together. Their energy was truly contagious! 🦋🌳

We’re excited to welcome more groups to experience nature, learn, explore, and make memories through programming with the Estero Forever Foundation once the entire Estero River Park opens to the public.

And there’s a wonderful history here — the historic Girl Scout House has been the location for groups and events since the 1940s. We love seeing young people enjoying this special place and helping carry that tradition forward! 💚

There is something ‘other-worldly’ about watching the sun slowly set and light the clouds with pastel colors while the crystal-clear turquoise water slowly rocks our boat. I Love the Keys!
