Dear midwives, please stop telling your clients that their placentas start deteriorating at 36 weeks. This is not supported by research. The placenta does not have an expiration date, and 36 weeks is not some magical point at which it suddenly begins to fail.
Placental function can be affected by a number of factors, and placental insufficiency can occur at different points in pregnancy. But that is very different from claiming that a healthy placenta begins to deteriorate simply because a pregnancy has reached 36 weeks.
We owe our clients evidence-based information, not arbitrary deadlines presented as established physiology. Informed consent means giving families accurate information so they can make decisions based on evidence, individual clinical circumstances, and their own values, not fear.
