Dear friends, as you may already know, GCSF officially closed its U.S. office the end of 2017. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, the dedicated staff, with Tam Nguyen as the leader, continued GCSF's philanthropic endeavor. We believe the last two years have efficiently been a transition time for the Vietnamese team to prepare for their readiness in carrying on GCSF's humanitarian efforts in Vietnam. With the commitment from Tam and his staff, Community Development Fund (CDF) was officially established September 2018. Your continued support for Vietnam is greatly appreciated. One of the wonderful things about the GCSF team is that they are always looking for ways to make a difference. Even "small" gestures can mean a lot to those in the communities we serve, such as this example in Myanmar.

From our GCSF managers in Myanmar: "We visited to Kan Hla Preschool yesterday where 32 children attend. During our last visit, we found out that each student has one school uniform and the most parents can't afford to buy another one. Each student should have two uniforms. So we decided to support one school uniform to each student. Yesterday we donated the uniforms and the children are so happy. The children look happy, healthy and very active."

The ophthalmic assistant training program at Quang Tri Medical School is well underway. Founded in 2015, we are proud to have been a part of establishing this program which will provide good professional jobs for Quang Tri residents and also extend the reach of eye care to more rural areas of the province.

Texas Hold 'Em is the another game available at our MOONLIGHT LUCK fundraiser on SEPTEMBER 15.

Big THANK YOU to Texas Hold 'Em table sponsor STEPHEN WALLER, MD.

How to play?
"Two cards, known as the hole cards, are dealt face down to each player, and then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages. The stages consist of a series of three cards ("the flop"), later an additional single card ("the turn" or "fourth street"), and a final card ("the river" or "fifth street"). Each player seeks the best five card poker hand from any combination of the seven cards of the five community cards and their own two hole cards." ~ Wikipedia

News from Saturday's visit to the WOMEN'S OUTREACH PROGRAM at Ayetheryar in Myanmar.

"All the pregnant women, newborn babies and mothers are very healthy because of GCSF's support and caring by our midwives. The number of patients was not too much today because most of the pregnant mothers just delivered their babies.

The midwives do pregnancy tests carefully and refer the patients who need to deliver at the hospital, so both of the mother and baby are safe.

Golden Girls clinic is running well and the number of patients increased this month because it is raining season and most patients suffer with the seasonal flu. The doctor and nurses gave treatment and health education about the flu." ~ Nway Nway, GCSF Myanmar

A tip for September 15th's Moonlight Luck. Not sure what Roulette is and how to play it? Info from our provider Vegas Time Associates.

"ROULETTE
A U.S. roulette wheel consists of 38 numbered slots: numbers 1 to 36, a zero, and a double zero. The betting layout consists of every individual number as well as a host of “outside” or combinations of numbers. After the players make their bets the dealer spins the wheel and a ball and after several seconds the ball will land in one of the numbered slots."

How about this alternative to celebrate your birthday? Facebook will help you collect money for a charity on your birthday.

Many thanks to Marcia Selva for being GCSF's inaugural birthday donor. Happy birthday Marcia!

Facebook is testing a feature that helps you collect money for a charity on your birthday instead of gifts.

Unsure how to play Blackjack? Here you go!
"BLACKJACK
Vegas Time! Associates blackjack is played with four decks of cards (four deck shoe). Cards of rank 2 through 10 are scored according to their face value. All face cards are 10 points. Aces are semi-wild and can be worth either 1 or 11 points. The highest hand in blackjack is an ace and any 10-point card and is called a blackjack. A winning blackjack pays 3:2. If both player and dealer have a blackjack the bet is a push. Aside from a blackjack a winning hand pays even money. The player wins if his hand has more points than the dealer, without going over 21. Thus a 21-point hand is the highest and is why the game is sometimes called 21. If either the player or dealer go over 21 it is called a break or bust and automatically loses. If both the player and dealer bust the player loses. If the player and dealer tie the bet is a push.

A round of blackjack begins with each player placing a bet in the square directly in front of him/her. Then the dealer will give each player and himself two cards. Player cards are dealt face up. One dealer card is dealt face up (the up card) and the other face down (the hole card). If the dealer has a ten or an ace as the up card it is possible he has a blackjack in which case all player hands will lose except with another blackjack.

In the event the dealer has an ace as the up card he will allow the players to insure their hands against a blackjack. This is much like any insurance policy in which you are betting something bad will happen. The insurance bet in blackjack pays 2:1 if the dealer has a blackjack. If the dealer has an ace showing and a player has a blackjack the dealer may ask “even money?” This is because if the player has a blackjack the net result of both the blackjack and the insurance bet will be an even money win regardless of whether the dealer has a blackjack. After all players have had a chance to accept or decline insurance the dealer will check the hole card.

After it has been established that the dealer does not have a blackjack the player in turn may play their hands. The following options are available.

Stand: If the player is satisfied with his hand as-is he may stand pat. To signify you wish to stand wave your hand as if to wave the dealer away.

Hit: If the player wishes to take another card he may continue to do so until he either stands or busts. To signify you wish to hit tap the table with your finger.

Double: If the player feels he needs one and only one more card then he may double his bet and be dealt one more card, good or bad. This option is only offered on the first two cards, and on the first two cards after splitting. To signify you wish to double place another wager next to your original wager of equal value.

Split: If the player’s first two cards are of equal point value he may split them into two hands. In this event each card is the first card of a new hand. The player must also make another wager of equal value to the first for the second hand. The player may usually resplit up to 2 or 3 times if another splitting opportunity arises. Doubling after splitting is always allowed. To signify you wish to split put the additional wager next to the original wager.

After all players have played their hands, from the dealer’s left to right, the dealer will play his hand. The dealer has no free will but must always play by certain house rules. The rule is that the dealer must hit until he reaches a score of 17 or more. If the dealer busts all players that did not bust automatically win."O

Discovery DMC donated a house at Hart Pone Village on Inle Lake. The donors are high school students, who wanted to help build the house and did!

The new house is near the primary school and the donors had a chance to do some activities at the school as well. They painted the walls, drew some pictures, wrote their names on the partition, and played with the students.

They also participated in the house opening ceremony and received a blessing from the monks. The family is happy with their new house and the students will remember these special donors. Thank you Discovery DMC

Drawing Competition and Rewarding Ceremony has held July 19.

"We invited three artists from Taunggyi to be the judges.Twenty-nine children from eight villages competed at the final level and we choose first, second and third prizes from each level. We gave consolation prizes for the children who didn't get first, second and third prizes. We also invited the chiefs of the villages to attend the ceremony. Some of the parents also joined the ceremony and they are very happy to see their children's drawings.

The villagers from Yay Tan Village cooked the meals and offered lunch for all who come to ceremony.

Two artists showed the children how to draw. One showed oil painting and another one showed pencil drawing. All were so excited to see the drawings of the artists." ~ Nway Nway

Progress continues with the LEMONGRASS PROJECT in the Hai An commune to bring economic independence to nine families. The lemongrass plants are growing well despite the hard sunlight and the poor quality of sandy soil. The photo is of the watering system we installed. The plants are strong enough to withstand the strong coastal wind. The first harvest of leaves will be done in August. The leaves will be used for oil extraction.

Nearly 250 local healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses, midwives and traditional birth attendants, have been trained to be master trainers and practitioners for HBB. These people are taking care of thousands of pregnant women and babies as part of their daily responsibilities.

Our next effort is to reach out to Savannakhet province in Laos PDR where 4,767 pregnant women are in need of help. 6 master trainers from Savannakhet College of Health Science and 40 midwives currently working in remote communes in the province will participate into this program.

For the first time, GCSF's Mobile Library Group participated in the Children Literature Festival at Taunggyi University in Myanmar!

"The five children who are our most avid readers, GCSF Myanmar representatives Kaythi and Nway Nway, and one guardian from each village made a day of it. They left Nyaung Shwe at 8:30 a.m. and were back by 3:30 p.m.

The children enjoyed book shops, played games, and studied at the showrooms. Everyone had a wonderful time thanks to the generosity of our donors. Thank you!"
