2027 MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLAN (PART D) - Open Enrollment Information & Checklist
Before you sign up—or renew—your 2027 prescription drug plan, take a few minutes to review your coverage.
Even if you are staying with the same plan you had in 2026, your costs and covered medications may change for 2027.
Taking the time to review your plan now can help prevent unexpected prescription costs next year.
───
🔎 CHECK PLAN OPTIONS
To find a plan, visit Medicare.gov and use the Medicare Plan Finder to compare Part D prescription drug plans.
You should enter:
• Your preferred pharmacy
• The medications you currently take
Be sure to check:
☐ Is your preferred pharmacy in network?
☐ Are all of your medications covered?
☐ What will your copays or coinsurance be?
A medication being covered does not necessarily mean it will have a low copay.
☐ Does any medication require prior authorization?
Some medications may be covered but require your doctor or healthcare provider to obtain prior authorization before the plan will pay. This can sometimes delay getting a prescription filled.
☐ What is the plan's premium and deductible?
☐ What will your estimated total prescription costs be for the year?
───
💰 WHAT'S CHANGING IN 2027?
Part D Deductible
For 2027, Medicare prescription drug plans may have a deductible up to $700.
$2,400 Out-of-Pocket Threshold
In 2027, your out-of-pocket spending for covered Part D drugs is capped at $2,400. Once you reach this amount, you pay $0 for covered Part D drugs for the remainder of the calendar year.
Remember: Your actual costs will depend on the plan you choose and the medications you take.
───
💵 WAYS TO HELP LOWER OR MANAGE YOUR PRESCRIPTION COSTS
1. CHECK TO SEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR EXTRA HELP
Extra Help is a Medicare program that helps people with limited income and resources pay for Medicare prescription drug costs, including premiums, deductibles, and copays.
Some Medicare beneficiaries qualify automatically, while others need to apply.
For 2027, people who receive the full Extra Help benefit can have:
• $0 plan premium
• $0 deductible
• Reduced prescription copays
Don't assume you don't qualify. Eligibility limits can change, so it's worth checking your eligibility each year.
───
2. CONSIDER THE MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION PAYMENT PLAN
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan is a voluntary payment option that allows you to spread your out-of-pocket costs/copays for covered Part D medications across the calendar year instead of paying the full amount at the pharmacy when you pick up your prescriptions.
How it works:
Instead of paying the pharmacy for covered Part D prescriptions at the time you pick them up, your Medicare drug plan sends you a monthly bill.
You will still pay your plan premium, if you have one.
Who might benefit?
This option may be helpful for people who have high prescription costs, particularly early in the year while paying down the plan deductible, because it can make those expenses more manageable by spreading payments throughout the year.
Important: The Prescription Payment Plan does not lower the cost of your medications or save you money. It simply changes how and when you pay your out-of-pocket costs.
There is no cost to participate in the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan.

✅ BEFORE YOU FINALIZE YOUR 2027 DRUG PLAN
Take a few minutes to ask yourself:
☐ Are all of my medications covered?
☐ Is my preferred pharmacy in network?
☐ Did I check the copay or coinsurance for each medication?
☐ Do any of my medications require prior authorization?
☐ Did I check the plan's deductible?
☐ Did I check whether I qualify for Extra Help?
☐ Would the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan help me manage my prescription expenses?
