What do sauna hats actually do?

Your head heats up first, and that’s why you leave the sauna early. A wool sauna hat keeps the heat off, so you stay longer. It’s also a cold plunge hat: the wool keeps your head warm, even when wet.

The best material for a sauna hat? 100% wool. My felted wool sauna hats are hand-sculpted from dense, undyed felt, washed only with water. No dyes, no polyester. This wool felt sauna hat protects your hair, and the brim folds down over your ears, eyes and nose.

When it comes to sauna hat material, you might even find a tiny piece of dry meadow grass in the wool. That’s how natural it is.

Shaved head, burning in the sauna? This undyed wool sauna hat takes the heat instead of your head.

When someone with a shaved head asks me if it truly helps, I tell them the truth: without hair, there's nothing between your scalp and the hottest air in the room.

I sculpt every hat tall on purpose, a pocket of space above your head, instead of wool pressed flat against it. That space becomes another layer between you and the heat, and room enough for long hair, or a brim folded down over your ears.

No hair to shield it, and your scalp takes the sauna's hottest air first.

If you have a shaved or bald head, you probably know the feeling: your head is ready to leave the sauna before the rest of you is.
A dense wool hat changes that. It keeps the direct heat off your scalp, so you can stay in a little longer, in comfort.

This one is tall, with no loop, in a brown that came from the sheep, never dyed. I hand-sculpt each hat myself, one at a time, from Alpine wool.

If you're plunging in the rain, this undyed wool sauna hat is the only cover you need.

When people ask me if wool actually handles rain and cold water at once, I tell them yes, sculpted wool absorbs a lot of water, holds its shape, and won't leave your head cold, unlike synthetic felt. Skip the umbrella, just put your sauna hat on, and head straight into the plunge.

This undyed wool sauna hat doesn't just smell clean. It repels dirt, naturally.

When I hand-sculpt each sauna hat from undyed wool, it feels slightly sticky, almost waxy, in my hands. That's lanolin, the sheep's own natural oil, still in the fiber. It's the same reason a trace of the alpine meadow stays in the wool too, nothing strong enough washes either one out.

It's the same oil used in skin balms. Gentle enough for skin, which is exactly what I want touching your head.

One more reason I leave the wool as close to how it grew as I can.

Somewhere in the Austrian Alps, nearly 10,000 feet up, a Tyrolean sheep grazes an alpine meadow it helps preserve.

Twice a year, it’s shorn. The wool travels to my studio, where I hand-sculpt it into an undyed wool sauna hat. Washed in water only, no machines, no dyes, no glue.

This is how a wool sauna hat is sculpted by my hand, seamless, from raw Alpine wool to your head.

Look closely, and you may find a trace of that meadow still in the wool. I leave it.
