October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that screening can make all the difference.

Regular mammograms are one of the most important tools for early breast cancer detection. Women at average risk should begin annual screening mammograms at age 40, and a personalized risk assessment at any time can help determine the best screening plan for you.

Talk with your primary care provider about your breast cancer risk and stay up to date with recommended screenings. At Franklin, the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center offers comprehensive breast imaging and care close to home with a team to support you every step of the way.

Meet Kelli Scriber, a second-year physician assistant student at the University of New England who is gaining hands-on experience in rural health care during her pediatrics clinical rotation at MaineHealth Franklin Pediatrics in Farmington.

Rotating with Tanya Lever, CPNP, Kelli has appreciated the opportunity to work with pediatric patients and learn from the Franklin team.

“I have really enjoyed working with pediatric patients and have learned so much from the great team here! As a PCTE grant scholar, I have also had the opportunity to participate in interprofessional shadowing experiences, which have helped me gain a deeper understanding of the unique needs of rural communities.”

The Primary Care Training and Enhancement (PCTE) grant program is overseen by the Franklin campus Area Health Education Center (AHEC) through a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant focused on interdisciplinary exposure and learning in rural communities.

We’re glad to be part of Kelli’s clinical education and to support the next generation of health care professionals who will serve communities like ours. We wish Kelli all the best as she continues her PA education!

Another successful Recovery Rally last month brought our community together to support recovery, connection and access to resources.

It’s great to see so many community partners come together to support individuals and families impacted by substance use and connect people with local resources.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s rally a success!

Dee, RN, from our Family Birth Center, is our most recent DAISY Award winner!

Dee was nominated by a first-time mother who unexpectedly went into labor early. She shared that Dee’s calm, reassuring presence helped turn a frightening experience into one she will always remember: “Because of Dee, I look back on the birth of my son with gratitude, joy and peace instead of fear.”

The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who go above and beyond, providing compassionate, skillful care and making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families.

Do you know a nurse at Franklin who deserves recognition? Submit a DAISY Award nomination at mainehealth.org/fhrecognition.

As National Recovery Month comes to a close, we’re wrapping up our care team spotlight series with one more member of the team helping support recovery in Franklin County.

Meet Sarah, a Program Management Specialist with the Healthy Community Coalition. Sarah works with our substance use and risk reduction programs, including the Franklin County Syringe Exchange and Recovery Center.

Sarah has been with HCC since June 2022 and is passionate about reducing stigma, preventing overdoses and helping people connect with support.

“Everyone deserves dignity and access to support. Recovery can take many forms, and there is no single pathway that works for every person.”

For Sarah, working in Franklin County is especially meaningful because of the way people and organizations come together to support one another.

“I feel fortunate to work in a community where people are willing to come together and find solutions.”

A lot can change in 20 years!

Since Let’s Go! began in 2006, the way we learn, play, connect and even track our steps has changed quite a bit. But one thing hasn’t changed: our commitment to helping children and families build healthy habits.

For 20 years, Let’s Go! has worked alongside schools, early care and education programs, health care teams and communities to make healthy choices easier for children and families. We are grateful for their partnership and support and look forward to continuing to grow, move and thrive together! letsgo.org/20years
