Increase Your Body’s Antioxidant System with HBOT

Not all oxidation is bad! Sure, oxidation from your environment and toxins are bad, and deplete our body.

But, the type of oxidation that hyperbaric oxygen therapy stimulates is coming from increased mitochondrial activity.

Your body not only has a defense mechanism against that, but your body will also increase its own antioxidant system.

So you get increases in superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and catalase.

Your body increases its capacity to tolerate that superoxide anion that's building up from mitochondrial function.

This helps the body become more resilient and tolerant of other external sources of oxidation as well.

LONG HAUL COVID

It's unfortunate that so many people are affected by this, but I am very grateful that some therapies, specifically something so simple and safe like HBOT, has the capacity to help these patients heal and recover from those long-term infections and the damage associated with it.

There are certain pieces of long haul COVID that are much more difficult to overcome as compared to other post-viral issues.

Some of those include:

Increased tissue damage from the inflammatory response

Lingering of the inflammation systemically in their system

Changes to their capillaries or their vascular system

Certain cardiovascular symptoms

Certain neurological issues that are a result also of that hypoxia from the inflammation and capillary damage.

Is it appropriate to apply hyperbaric oxygen for long haul COVID? The short answer is yes, but these are the reasons why.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has a very anabolic recovery, remodeling, and regenerative quality.

Once we start driving oxygen into circulation, we're helping to heal the lining of your blood vessels and to grow NEW blood vessels. That oxygen goes into those damaged cells and promotes an entire cellular and tissue healing response.

That healing response has the capacity to improve the cardiovascular function and to improve the damaged nerves as well (the neuropathies that we're seeing in patients in long haul COVID syndrome).

So, as you can see, HBOT absolutely can play a role in contributing to the healing effect of those suffering from long haul.

This post only has SOME of the high points, but if you want to hear more of how HBOT could help with Long-Haul COVID, check out our full video here:

Can HBOT temporarily make myopia worse?

It can. If someone is already nearsighted, hyperbaric may temporarily make them a little more myopic, and this tends to happen more often at higher pressures.

The important word is temporarily.

Even during a longer protocol, such as 40, 60, or 80 hours, it’s not typical for vision to continually get worse throughout the entire process. Usually, the change shifts a little and then stays relatively stable while the treatments continue.

After the hyperbaric treatments stop, vision will typically return to its pre-HBOT status within a few weeks.

What do I use alongside HBOT for someone with dementia?

In my opinion, hyperbaric oxygen should not be used by itself.

Dementia is complex, so I prefer a multidimensional approach that may include nutritional changes, certain supplements, IV therapies, methylene blue, red light therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, and other factors depending on the individual.

The goal is to use multiple tools together to try to improve cognitive performance and neuroplasticity over long periods of time.

HBOT can be an important part of that approach, but I don’t look at it as the only part.

Does higher HBOT pressure reduce inflammatory cytokines more than lower pressure (mild) HBOT?

Both mild-pressure and high-pressure hyperbarics reduced the overall inflammatory response, but they didn't affect every cytokine in exactly the same way.

In one comparison, 21 cytokines were statistically significantly reduced in the mild-pressure group, while 20 were significantly reduced in the high-pressure group. There was some overlap, but higher pressure had a greater effect on some cytokines, while lower pressure significantly reduced others that higher pressure did not affect to the same degree.

That raises an important clinical question: if we're dealing with inflammation, which cytokine markers should we be assessing to help determine the right HBOT protocol for the individual?

I think this is an area where we need a lot more research, but understanding these differences could eventually help us make more individualized decisions about pressure.

HBOT benefits don’t all happen on the same timeline.

Some changes can begin within the first few sessions. Patients often notice improvements in cellular energy, sleep quality, heart rate variability (HRV), and overall recovery relatively early in the process.

Other benefits take much longer to develop.

Long-term adaptations from HBOT may include angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels), stem cell mobilization, tissue repair and regeneration, neurogenesis, immune system regulation, mitochondrial adaptations, and even changes in gene expression and epigenetic signaling.

This is why treatment goals matter.

If you're looking for short-term improvements, those may begin within the first few sessions. But many of the deeper healing and regenerative effects associated with HBOT require consistent treatment over time.

Benefits come in stages, and understanding that timeline helps set realistic expectations for the healing process.

Every patient responds to HBOT differently, which is why we never start at the highest pressure.

In our protocols we always begin with a gentle introduction to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, typically 1.3 ATA, and gradually increase pressure over time as the body adapts.

A patient may spend several sessions at 1.3 before progressing to 1.5, then 1.75, and beyond if higher pressures are appropriate for their goals and issues.

The key is paying attention to how the patient responds.

If symptoms become aggravated at a particular pressure, we simply step back to the previous level and spend more time there before progressing again.

The goal isn't to reach the highest pressure possible.

The goal is to find the right pressure for the individual patient while maximizing benefit and minimizing unnecessary stress.

HBOT works best when the protocol is adapted to the person, not when the person is forced to adapt to the protocol.

Does HBOT make your body less adaptable or lazy because you're giving it more oxygen?

It's actually the opposite.

Going in and out of a hyperbaric chamber, or taking your mask off during a session, creates increases and decreases in oxygen levels. Your cells move from higher-than-normal oxygen levels back toward normal levels again.

Those changes can stimulate pathways involved in adaptation and resilience.

One example is the body's response to hypoxia. Hyperbaric oxygen is known to trigger an important pathway involved in that response, which helps explain why these changing oxygen levels can have effects beyond simply delivering more oxygen.

So I don't think of hyperbaric oxygen as allowing the body to become "lazy."

The repeated changes in oxygen exposure are actually part of what stimulates the body's adaptive response.

Honored to speak at the IHA conference and connect with so many people moving hyperbarics forward.

Thank you to the IHA for an incredible event and to everyone who joined us to learn, share, and challenge ideas.

The momentum doesn’t stop here. If you were there, what’s one takeaway you’re bringing back to your practice?

How does HBOT support brain recovery?

One of the ways hyperbaric oxygen may help is by reducing neuroinflammation in the central nervous system and the brain.

It can also support neuroplasticity and the development of new synapses, helping neurons form new connections and build stronger pathways between different areas of the brain.

HBOT is also known to release central nervous system stem cells. Those cells can mobilize into older or damaged tissues, where they may help support the development of healthier neural tissue and additional synaptic connections.

Those effects on inflammation, neuroplasticity, and stem cell mobilization are a major part of why I look at HBOT as a tool for supporting brain recovery.
