Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)—the dainty wildflower with a long history of healing. 🌿
Often referred to as nature’s first-aid plant, yarrow has been treasured by herbalists for centuries. Its delicate white flowers may look unassuming, but this resilient little herb holds a remarkable place in traditional herbalism.
Yarrow has traditionally been used to support the body through inflammation, minor wounds, bruises, digestive discomfort, fevers, & more. Herbalists have also long valued yarrow for its astringent & soothing properties, making it a wonderful addition to a medicinal or cottage garden.
One of the things I love most about yarrow is its resilience. It thrives in places where other plants struggle, returning year after year & quietly offering its gifts to the garden. There’s something beautiful about a plant that can be both delicate & incredibly hardy—a reminder that healing & strength can take many forms, sometimes gentle & sometimes challenging.
Yarrow is also native to California, where it occurs naturally in many regions. Growing native plants helps support local ecosystems & provides valuable habitat & resources for native pollinators & other wildlife, while avoiding the ecological concerns associated with introducing invasive plant species.
A beautiful flower, a resilient herb, & an important part of our natural landscape.
