Searching "speech therapist near me" is easy. Knowing which one is right for your child is the harder part.
Once you've found a few options nearby, here's what's worth looking for:
โ
The right credentials. Look for someone licensed and ASHA-certified, ideally with the CCC-SLP designation. It's the baseline that tells you they're properly trained.
โ
Experience with your concern. An SLP who works often with your child's specific challenge, whether that's apraxia, a speech delay, or feeding, brings a depth that generalists may not.
โ
The right age fit. Therapy for a toddler looks nothing like therapy for a teen. Make sure they regularly work with kids your child's age.
โ
You're part of the process. The best therapists loop you in, share what's working, and give you ways to carry it home, rather than handing your kid back with a vague ""went great.""
โ
Your child feels at ease. This one's easy to overlook but matters most. Progress comes faster when a kid feels safe enough to try, not tested.
โ
A team around them. If your child ever needs OT or PT too, a practice that offers it all under one roof saves you from piecing together a care team across town.
Credentials get you in the door. But the right fit is what actually moves your child forward.
