How did society get here…

Maybe this is a hot take in today's climate, but I don't care what race or gender a person is-mental illness should not be an excuse for heinous crimes.

One of the most persistent narratives surrounding the South Carolina self-defense case is the claim that Cyrus Carmack-Belton was shot by a racist while simply running away. Testimony presented at trial described a more complex sequence of events.

According to testimony from Rick Chow’s son, Cyrus initially ran, fell, and while attempting to get back up, pointed a firearm in the son’s direction. The defense argued that Rick Chow responded to what he believed was an immediate threat to his child.

Regardless of how people interpret the legal or factual issues in the case, one aspect is often overlooked: Rick Chow remained at the scene after the shooting. Testimony indicated that he participated in life-saving efforts, including performing rescue breaths and attempting to clear vomit from Cyrus’s airway in an effort to help him breathe.

To many, this detail speaks to the complexity of the incident. The same man who believed he was acting to protect his son from what he perceived as a deadly threat did not respond with hatred or indifference afterward. Instead, once the threat was over, he reportedly attempted to save the life of the teenager he had just shot.

Whether one agrees with the verdict or not, the image of a father acting in defense of his child and then immediately trying to preserve the life of the person he wounded illustrates the difficult human realities that often get lost in simplified narratives.
