In 1947, medical wards across London operated under a cold, unspoken rule: when a patient could no longer be cured, the system quietly abandoned them. Terminal patients were moved to isolated back wards, dulled with heavy sedation, and left to fade away while families were told, "There’s nothing more we can do."

Into one of those crowded surgical wards walked Cicely Saunders, a thirty-year-old medical social worker. There she met David Tasma, a forty-year-old Polish Jewish refugee who had escaped the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto, only to find himself dying alone in a country where doctors had stopped trying.

Instead of walking away, Cicely sat by his bed day after day, listening to his fears and holding his hand. Before he passed away in February 1948, David handed her his entire life savings, five hundred pounds, and whispered a request that would alter modern medicine forever: "I want a place where people like me can die properly. I’ll be a window in your home."

At the time, Cicely had no home, no clinic, and no support.

Here is the part many people miss: Cicely didn't just set out to build a shelter; she had to completely revolutionize how the scientific community understood human suffering. When she observed nuns at a local care home giving pain medication on a strict schedule, preventing pain before it returned while keeping patients conscious, she realized modern medicine was ignoring basic human relief. But when she tried to share these findings with physicians, they dismissed her because she was a nurse and social worker.

Realizing that doctors would only listen to another physician, thirty-three-year-old Cicely enrolled in medical school.

After earning her medical degree in 1957, she spent years conducting rigorous clinical research on pain control. She scientifically proved that regular doses of pain relief did not cause addiction in terminal patients; instead, it granted them clarity, allowing them to spend their final months awake, comfortable, and present with the people they loved. She also pioneered the concept of "total pain", the revolutionary idea that physical agony cannot be treated without addressing a person's emotional, social, and spiritual suffering.

In 1967, nineteen years after David Tasma’s death, Cicely opened St. Christopher’s Hospice in South London. Built near the entrance was a glass window, honoring the £500 gift from a dying refugee.

St. Christopher's became the world's first modern academic hospice, blending compassionate, home-like care with cutting-edge medical research. The model quickly spread across the globe, inspiring the creation of American hospices in the 1970s and establishing palliative care as an essential medical specialty nationwide.

When Dame Cicely Saunders died of breast cancer in 2005 at age eighty-seven, she passed away inside St. Christopher’s Hospice, surrounded by peace, cared for by the staff she had trained, in the very home she had spent nineteen years building.

Before Cicely, dying was treated as a medical defeat to be hidden in the dark. She spent her life proving to the world that how a human being leaves this life deserves every bit as much science, dignity, and love as how they enter it.

💜 80 years of caring for our community. 💜

What a special evening celebrating 80 years of Cancer Care Services and the incredible impact they have made on individuals and families facing cancer throughout our community.

Journey Hospice was honored to help sponsor and host this celebration alongside so many wonderful organizations and people who share a heart for serving others. Together, we raised more than $500 to support those fighting the battle against cancer.

As a nurse-founded and nurse-owned hospice with deep roots in oncology, this mission is especially close to our hearts. Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, and a story - and for 80 years, Cancer Care Services has been there offering support, resources, hope, and compassion.

Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, sponsored, and helped make the evening so meaningful. This is what community looks like. 💜

Cheers to 80 years of Cancer Care Services and many more years of making a difference!
