Today we have guest blogger Margaret McNamara, PhD, sharing her insights on the basics of gut health.
Gut Health 101: Small Changes, Big Impact
Your gut does far more than digest food. Research shows it plays a role in immune function, mood, brain health, hormones, sleep, skin, weight, nutrient absorption, and more.
✨ Try limiting:
• Ultra-processed foods
• Excess added sugar
• Excess alcohol
• Artificial sweeteners (for some people)
• Frequent NSAID use (such as ibuprofen or naproxen)
🥗 Add more:
• Fiber-rich foods (vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds)
• Fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi)
• Prebiotic foods (garlic, onions, asparagus, oats, bananas)
• Omega-3-rich foods (salmon, sardines, flax, chia, walnuts)
• Polyphenol-rich foods (berries, olive oil, green tea, herbs, spices)
💧 Don’t forget the basics:
✔️ Stay hydrated
✔️ Eat slowly and chew well
✔️ Exercise regularly
✔️ Prioritize quality sleep
✔️ Manage stress through prayer, deep breathing, mindfulness, or time outdoors
Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to gut health. Your genetics, microbiome, medical history, medications, and lifestyle all influence what works best for you.
