Did you know that your health care-providing entity could be financially incentivized to keep you sick? And how do you know if that's the case?
In fee for service (FFS) medicine, the more that is done to you, the more money you pay. This makes sense, in theory; if you use more services, your care costs more.
Unfortunately, however, the more the service-providing organization does TO you, the more they profit as well. So those types of organizations are financially incentivized to sell more services - to do more TO you. For example, they profit more when a patient sees more providers, more specialists, and has more things done to them such as surgeries and lab testing. They profit less if the patient gets healthy and needs fewer services.
At Mila Family Health, using the direct primary care (DPC) model, however, we only profit from subscriptions. Sure, we break even for labs and procedures but we don't generate profit for those. Therefore, we're not financially incentivized to sell those things. Instead, we sell access. The more a patient uses our services, the less we get paid per service because of that flat rate that patient pays. Therefore, we're incentivized to get people healthy so that they stop using our services.
So when you are searching for a health care-providing entity, here is what you need to ask yourself:
Is this entity helping me get and stay healthy? Or is this entity profiting from keeping me sick?
If it's the latter, go elsewhere.
