HS can affect so much more than your skin. It can affect your confidence, your relationships, and the way you live your everyday life.

In her own words, this patient shares how finding care at Thrive changed her life, helping her feel more confident, live more freely, and even inspiring her to pursue a career in healthcare. 💜

Every patient's journey is different, but no one should have to face HS alone.

Can HS come back after surgery?

With hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), there’s an important distinction between recurrence and developing new lesions in another area.

When HS is treated with complete surgical excision, it cannot return to that same treated area. However, patients may still develop HS in other parts of the body.

That’s why treatment, education, and ongoing care all matter.

🎥 Dr. Max explains what patients should know about HS and recurrence.

HS can start as a small bump and progress to painful abscesses beneath the skin.

Not everyone with HS needs surgery. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease, and surgery may be appropriate in certain cases.

HS is not one-size-fits-all. The right treatment starts with the right care.

For many people living with HS, the journey can feel like an endless cycle: painful lesions, recurring procedures, medications, and still no lasting relief.

Over time, that can take a toll far beyond the physical symptoms. It can affect daily life, confidence, well-being, and hope.

That’s why meaningful HS care is about more than treating the next lesion. It’s about helping patients move toward healing, restored well-being, and a different path forward.

Because hope matters, too. ❤️

Early-stage HS? There are things you can do before surgery is even on the table.

Dr. Crist breaks down what can help manage early-stage HS: know your triggers, quit smoking, work toward a healthy weight if appropriate for you, use targeted topical washes, and consider laser hair removal to help reduce flares in affected areas.

Starting treatment early may help reduce flares and prevent HS from getting worse over time.

This is general education, not medical advice. Talk with your dermatologist or care team about what’s right for you.

If our wound care advice looks different from what you've found elsewhere, that's intentional.

HS wounds don't heal like a typical surgical incision, so a lot of the standard advice out there doesn't apply. What we share comes from what our surgical team has seen work in practice, supported by the current literature on HS wound management, not just tradition.

Here are 5 things we want every patient to know before their first dressing change after surgery.

This is general guidance only. Always follow the specific instructions from your own care team, and call us directly if something about your recovery doesn't look or feel right.

She got her mobility back. She got her life back. And most importantly…

She’s thriving. 💜

Her message to anyone considering surgery?

“It was worth it.”

The right plan is the one tailored to you, including surgery when the time is right.
