Episode 3: “Will insurance cover this procedure?”

Many people ask me this, and the answer may be better than you think. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 states that if your insurance covers a mastectomy, it must also cover the tattoo procedure as part of your reconstruction.

I can provide a detailed receipt with the insurance codes and information you may need. I always advise my patients to call their insurance company first and ask what documentation they need to consider reimbursement. Many of my patients have had great success getting reimbursed, which helps defray the cost.

Every October, pink is everywhere. Pink ribbons, pink packaging, pink everything. But a pink label doesn’t always mean money is going to breast cancer research or care.

It’s called “Pinkwashing. That’s when a business uses the breast cancer ribbon or pink marketing to look caring, but doesn’t actually plan to donate anything to research or treatment. They care more about brand awareness than the cause.

So how do you protect yourself from it? Look for transparency. Is there a statement that says how much is donated and where it’s going? Be careful, because some companies can be sneaky about a very tiny donation and still call it a “donation.”

Some products with a breast cancer ribbon on them are marketing, not support. Sometimes the best move is to give directly to a reputable breast cancer research institution or a local charity that helps women struggling financially get breast cancer care.

Just be mindful of what you’re buying, and make sure you’re helping causes you really intend to help. 💗

Episode 2: “Why do you keep getting blocked on social media?”

Social media isn’t run by humans anymore. It’s run by bots and algorithms trained to flag certain images and keywords. They don’t understand context. They don’t care that this is healthcare. They don’t care that this is life-changing medical work.

They just see what they’re programmed to see and flag it.

Honestly, I’m flattered that my work is so realistic that the algorithm thinks they’re real 🍈🍈’s!! 😉

But I’m not going anywhere. This work matters too much.

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I want to talk about something important: not all breast cancer looks alike. 💗

The scars you see above represent different journeys, different bodies, different stories. But they all share one thing: strength.

Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate. It affects women. It affects men. It affects every age, every background, every body type. Some survivors have mastectomies. Some have lumpectomies. Some have reconstruction. Some don’t. All of it is valid. All of it matters.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. I’ve even met men who have gone through this journey too.

I’ve had the honor of meeting survivors from all walks of life, and I get to be a small part of their healing journey through these tattoos. They show me that there’s no “one way” to survive cancer. There’s just resilience, courage, and the power of choosing to feel whole again.

To every survivor out there: your story matters. Your scars are proof that you’re still here!

This is what keeps me going. 💗

One of my incredible patients surprised me with a gift card to get a facial, and over the weekend I finally took a moment for myself. An oxygenating facial later and my face feels like a baby’s skin and I’m feeling like a whole new person.

But here’s what really got me: she recognized that I’m the carer. That what I do is pour into people all day long. And she wanted to make sure I was taking care of myself too.

To every single one of my patients: thank you! Thank you for trusting me with something so personal. Thank you for showing up to your appointments and doing the healing work. And thank you for reminding me that even the “carer” needs a little self-care sometimes.

Self-care isn’t selfish! You cannot pour from an empty cup. You all inspire me every single day. 🧡
