Houston Update

Well, this trip to Houston didn’t exactly go as planned… We went to Houston last week for or “normal” checkup and this one wasn’t so “normal”.

Due to an insurance change at work, Blue Care Network decided that a PET scan was “NOT MEDICALLY NECESSARY.” Because of that, I was not allowed to have the PET scan that was scheduled, which means we weren’t able to directly compare things to my previous PET scans.

Instead, I had to go through additional testing to basically prove that the PET scan is medically necessary. So, in some ways, this trip to Houston felt almost wasted but my doctor did all they could with what the insurance would allow.

The good news is that the scans I was able to get came back looking good overall from what they can tell. 🙏

There is still a small spot showing on one of my ribs, but they can’t tell much about it from the CT scan. There is also something showing on my liver, but again, they can’t determine exactly what it is from the CT. My doctor thinks it is not anything to be concerned about right now, which is obviously good news.

Ironically, those findings may now help provide the justification insurance apparently needs to approve the PET scan so we can actually see what’s going on and compare everything properly.

So for now, we’re taking this as GOOD NEWS and moving forward. Hopefully the next step is getting the PET scan approved so we can get the answers and comparison we originally came to Houston for.

Cancer is frustrating and stressful enough without having to fight insurance companies along the way, but we keep moving forward.

Justin & Kelley will fly down tomorrow morning and be able to relax for the evening and meet up with lifelong friend Landon Shores for dinner after his move to Texas!

Wednesday will be a day of testing, and Thursday they’ll meet with the doctor before flying back home.

Thank you to everyone continuing to pray, check in, and support them through this journey.

Updates to come! 🙏

Hey, everyone! Kelley here 👋🏻 with an update from Houston!!

Over the last 3 months, Justin has been doing amazing with his new cancer med. His first med came with some rough side effects that made daily life tough. He started the new med and, within a couple of weeks, he noticed huge improvements! Fast forward 3 months and we are back in Houston with some awesome updates 🤍

We just left his appointment and his doctor is very happy with his test results!! In the past, each scan showed how every cancerous spot was shrinking and we didn't really see that this time. Test results are showing everything is pretty much the same. I was questioning how it didn’t seem like anything shrunk, but he said it will get to a certain point where it won’t shrink anymore, so that might be the point that he’s at now. When that happens, it’s considered scar tissue. Nothing is spreading, so this could be the new norm going forward. He is getting another transfusion today for his rib (he fractured it approximately 6 months ago pushing a cart into a cart corral 🙄).
Blood work is good also. This new med was a game changer for sure and is working very well for Justin!

Thank you for all of the prayers!
