It’s official. My diploma finally arrived!! 🎊🤩😁😎
“What They Gave Up”
First-generation American. First in my family to earn a Master’s degree.
I’m overwhelmed with gratitude, because this moment isn’t really just mine.
My parents didn’t have the opportunities I’ve had, not even close. They sacrificed more than I’ll probably ever fully understand. Left everything familiar behind. Didn’t speak a word of English, and took the only jobs they could get, long hours in factories, so I wouldn’t have to. Went without so I could have. I was born here, in Illinois, handed a life they built out of their own sacrifice and hard work, in a language that wasn’t even theirs at first.
It’s their sacrifice that got me where I am today. It’s their strength that became my strength, the kind that tells you you can achieve anything, at any age. Even now.
It doesn’t feel like just my accomplishment. It feels like theirs too, the ending of a sentence they started decades ago and never got to finish themselves.
My dad isn’t here to see it, but he would be so proud. I don’t think pride needs presence. I know he knows.
Some things aren’t really about achievement. They’re about continuation.
Life is a continuation of karma in motion. You give your best to your children, and your children’s children will give theirs. The seed you plant keeps growing long after you’re gone. It’s about doing your very best in life carrying forward everything they gave up so you could become the person you were always meant to be.
