Sometimes there are chapters in our lives that feel heavy and humbling, maybe a little embarrassing, but they are often a necessary part of a bigger, more beautiful story.
This week on the Solo Parent podcast, I shared part of my own story growing up.Before I was born, both of my parents struggled with alcoholism.
After they got sober and were in recovery, my dad decided he wanted to go back to school to become a chemical dependency counselor so he could give away the gift of sobriety he had received.
In that season of change and while he was in college, our family finances became incredibly tight. We were on welfare and food stamps. I remember those days as a young child, and my mom has shared how embarrassing that season was for her at times.
But it was just one chapter in a much longer story. That hard season was actually an investment in a healthier, transformed future.
My dad did become a counselor. He went on to help dozens, if not hundreds, of people break free from substance abuse, eventually opening his own treatment center in Minneapolis and impacting countless lives.
None of that beautiful legacy would have happened if my parents hadn’t been willing to humble themselves, walk through that financial hardship together, and choose the difficult road of growth.
Sometimes, the storm or the struggle you are sitting in now isn’t the end of your story. It’s a necessary investment for long-term healing, transformation, and purpose.
Don’t lose heart in the messy chapters! God wasn’t finished with my parents or my family, and He isn’t finished with you either! 💛
