There's three parts to "good" nutrition. 1) Correct information and understanding 2) Planning 3)Implementation. Part of the planning is making sure you have what you need each and every week. I shop online and am happy to hit repeat every week with my staples and if we have a week where we go through it quicker, I reorder it again. Life is too short to stress about your food. This is for the general public, athletes, and my eating disorder clients. YES, you can gain weight the wrong way. So many of my athletes, eating disorder patients, and general public feel "safe" with protein because it's exonerated by brads, chads, and dads HOWEVER you need ALL macronutrients to gain weight the right way AND you need to work with someone who has the experience to assess YOUR body and give you evidence based recs. Unpopular opinion.... If your kid is in middle school and high school and getting appropriate nutrition KUDOS to you as a parent. It's more common that they aren't and there's many reasons why. Talk to your kids about the importance of nutrition AND model it again and again. If you want your kid to perform well and have good grades you have to be involved with how they are eating. You should constantly fuel your body if you are competing or practicing longer than an hour REGARDLESS of your prefuel. Everyone is different and starting at 15-30g of carbohydrates every 30-45 minutes is a BASIC guideline. Some ideas: 2 dried mangos, banana, fruit snacks, 2 fig newtons, a sport drink WITH carbohydrates, or applesauc squeezie. Try it! You'll like it.

Every week I'm reminded of how much automatic negative thinking contributes to suffering. People working through Eating Disorders aren't the only ones who are challenged with this either.

The only way to work through the chaos of negative thinking which can trigger poor decisions is to challenge the thought. What are the facts behind your thinking?

If you can't find a fact then you need to come to the conclusion that maybe your thought isn't correct and reorganize the thought process. This is ACTIVE work that needs to happen repeatedly until it's natural.

When it comes to performance, anyone can have a bad day. When you feel sluggish and blah over and over it's time to figure out what the contributing factors are. Sleep, hydration, and nutrition are just some of our favorite topics and when there's a disturbance to any we see a decrease in sports performance AND 'human performance.'

We're different. Last week I had a handful of new clients start with me who were FRUSTRATED. They were told their labs were abnormal and it's probably genetic, or that they just need to eat or take a supplement. They were told they have a stress fracture and given no direction but a PT referral, even though this was their third one in two years. Most have been working with the same providers for years and feels like they are exactly where they were when they started. Everyone processes things differently and many things can be true at once.

You should feel that your team is LISTENING to you, INVESTIGATING why your body reacting the way it is, and REFERRING you to the best. When you discuss an ailment you should be getting a referral to a specialist but many providers FAIL to do this. We live in a society that has allowed big pharma and insurance to take over client's well being and people are suffering.

It leads us to think about how we can guide and protect ALL our athletes. It's also important to consider the emotional side of every athlete. Parents, I'm looking at you. Find out when your child's lunch is, get up with them for breakfast, help them plan for snacks. We're hiring! Our Kindred staff works closely with therapists all over the country AND we also have a need for in person/virtual therapist who does not have a wait list in Maryland. We'd love for you to join our team!

Kindred Nutrition & Kinetics is a first line referral from most Physicians and Pediatricians in Frederick, MD and outlying counties for suspected and confirmed Eating Disorder Treatment. In addition we also work with Sports Nutrition and Performance clients who also benefit from behavioral counseling.

The individual in this role will have 100% autonomy with their schedule. New clients will be funneled through our initial assessment and dietitian meetings. In the last 30 days we have added 27 new clients to our team. Usually 1/2 to 1/3 of our clients require a referral to therapy.

It may seem odd to get to talk about National Financial Awareness Day in this forum and it's very important! The landscape continues to change for the worse and specialized providers cannot afford to stay in business with the rates of reimbursement. Unfortunately this falls to the patient who pays for the bill. Every year at open enrollment I try to get a good understanding of my out of network rates, deductibles and more. I then decide how much to add to a HSA. With kids in sports I have paid out of pocket for multiple ambulances, a maxillofacial surgeon, and orthopedic because it was necessary. I'm thankful that I budget for healthcare every year and recommend every family does this if possible. Need help figuring out your benefits and nutrition counseling? We're here to help!
