Thinking about covering an old tattoo? The process starts with figuring out how to work with what’s already there. 🖤

The size, darkness and placement of your existing tattoo all help determine what’s possible—and which new designs will give you the strongest result.

Here’s what goes into the planning:

▪️ Size: The new tattoo often needs to be larger than the original so the artist has enough room to build an effective design.

▪️ Darkness: Existing dark ink affects the colors, shading and details we can use. A light or delicate design may not provide the coverage you’re expecting.

▪️ Placement: The new design needs to cover the old tattoo while still fitting the shape and natural flow of that area of your body.

Bring your ideas, but leave room for your artist’s recommendations. Sometimes the strongest cover-up looks different from the design you originally imagined.

Some tattoos can be covered as they are. Others may need lightening first or an entirely different approach. An in-person evaluation allows us to give you honest, realistic expectations.

Walk-in or appointment? The right answer depends on what you have in mind. 🖤

Walk-ins can be a great fit for smaller, straightforward tattoos or choosing something from available flash—depending on artist availability and the time your tattoo will require.

An appointment is usually the better route for:

▪️ Larger tattoos
▪️ Detailed custom designs
▪️ Cover-ups
▪️ Projects requiring additional planning
▪️ Working with a specific artist

A little preparation helps either way:

▪️ Bring reference images or an idea of what you want.
▪️ Know approximately where you want it and how large.
▪️ Be ready to discuss your budget.

A walk-in means you can stop by and ask about getting tattooed that day. It doesn’t guarantee an immediate opening, and your design may still require an appointment after an artist reviews it.

Your tattoo appointment—whether it’s your first or your fiftieth—shouldn’t feel like a test. 🖤

You don’t need to know all the tattoo terminology or have every detail figured out before you talk to us. That’s what the conversation is for.

Here’s what helps:

▪️ Bring your photo ID.
▪️ Have a few reference images or an idea of what you like.
▪️ Think about placement, approximate size and what you’re comfortable spending.
▪️ Wear something comfortable that allows access to the area being tattooed.

Still unsure about the details? Your artist can help you talk through what works for your design, placement and budget.

Before tattooing starts, take your time checking the stencil. Speak up if you have questions or want to discuss an adjustment. You don’t have to pretend you know what comes next—we want you to feel comfortable asking.
