# # # 💉 What Does It Mean to *Centrifuge Blood* — and Why Do We Do It?

When blood is drawn, it’s a **mixture of different components** — red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma (the yellowish fluid). To properly test or process these components, the sample needs to be **separated** — and that’s where *centrifugation* comes in.

🌀 **Centrifuging** is the process of spinning the blood sample at high speeds in a machine called a *centrifuge*. This motion causes the heavier components (like red blood cells) to settle at the bottom, while the lighter plasma or serum rises to the top.

* It allows the lab to test only the plasma or serum for things like glucose, cholesterol, hormones, or drug levels.
