Your labor is more than a number.

When you hear “You’re 5 centimeters,” it can be tempting to think that number tells the whole story. But for a midwife, dilation is only one piece of the puzzle.

During labor, we’re looking at the whole picture:
✨ How are your contractions progressing?
✨ How is baby tolerating labor?
✨ What is baby’s position?
✨ Is baby descending into the pelvis?
✨ Is the cervix thinning and moving forward?
✨ Are your membranes intact or ruptured?
✨ How are you coping—your breathing, energy, sounds, and overall well-being?

A cervical exam can tell us about dilation, effacement, station, and baby’s position—but we don’t need to check your cervix constantly to know that labor is progressing.

Sometimes a mom may be “only” 4 centimeters but clearly deep in active labor. Another mom may be 7 centimeters and still have plenty of work ahead of her.

Birth isn’t a race to 10 centimeters.

At Morning Star, we care for the mother and baby in front of us—not just the number on a chart. We watch, listen, assess, and support the natural unfolding of labor.

A LOT more than you might think!

When your midwife walks through the door, she’s bringing a box whole birth bag filled with the tools and supplies needed to care for both you and your baby.

🧤 Gloves & chux pads
✂️ Sterile birth instruments
🌿 Herbs & homeopathics
💊 Medications
👶🏼 Newborn resuscitation equipment, including a PPV bag
🩺 Doppler
🫁 Pulse oximeter
🩺 Stethoscope & blood pressure cuff

Behind all those supplies is something even more important: the knowledge, training, and experience to know when and how to use them.

Your midwife comes prepared for the normal, the unexpected, and everything in between.

Tandem nursing…

Whether you’re breastfeeding twins or nursing a newborn and a toddler, tandem nursing can be a beautiful way to nourish and bond with your children.

For some mothers, it means feeding two little ones at once. For others, it means continuing to nurse an older child while welcoming a new baby. There may be a learning curve, but with support and patience, it can be a wonderful part of motherhood.

And when nursing a newborn and toddler, remember: your newborn’s needs come first, since breast milk is their primary source of nutrition.

There’s no one “right” way to nurse. Every mother and every family is different—and your breastfeeding journey can grow and change right alongside your children. 🤍

The First Month of Pregnancy: Weeks 1–4

It may be hard to believe, but so much is happening during these very first weeks—even before you know you’re pregnant!

Week 1: Technically, you aren’t pregnant yet! Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last menstrual period, so this week is part of the preparation for ovulation and conception.

Week 2: Ovulation is approaching, and your body is preparing for the possibility of conception. If s***m meets the egg, a new human life begins!

Week 3: Conception has occurred! The tiny new human begins rapidly dividing as the newly formed embryo travels toward the uterus, where implantation will occur.

Week 4: Implantation typically occurs around this time, and pregnancy hormones begin rising. You may even get your first positive pregnancy test! Meanwhile, this tiny baby is already beginning the earliest stages of development.

It may seem like “nothing” is happening during these first few weeks, but the foundation for an entire human life is already being laid.

From the very beginning, there is a beautiful unfolding of God’s plan—long before a heartbeat can be heard, a belly begins to grow, or you get to hold your baby in your arms.

Month one may be tiny—but it is anything but insignificant.

Follow along as we journey through pregnancy, one month at a time!

The umbilical cord has a purpose—even after baby is born.

At Morning Star, we prioritize delayed cord clamping, allowing time for the placenta to continue providing blood to baby after birth.

Rather than rushing to clamp the cord, we allow it to finish its work. We watch for the cord to stop pulsating and become limp and white, before stepping in to clamp or cut.

Research supports delayed cord clamping for its numerous benefits to newborns, including improved blood volume, higher hemoglobin levels, and better iron stores in the first months of life.

And when the time does come to cut the cord, we love making it part of the family’s experience. Offering the scissors to dad (unless he doesn’t want to) and taking pictures of the moment. It’s a simple thing, but one that can make the transition from pregnancy to parenthood feel even more tangible.

A little more time. A little more connection. A beautiful beginning.

Just when you thought the cramping was over, you may notice those familiar waves of contractions returning in the moments after birth.

These are called afterbirth cramps, or afterpains, and while they can be uncomfortable, they serve an important purpose!
As your uterus works to shrink back down to its pre-pregnancy size, these contractions also help compress the blood vessels where the placenta was attached, helping to reduce postpartum bleeding.

You may notice them more strongly while breastfeeding because nursing releases oxytocin, the same hormone that causes contractions during labor. They can also become more noticeable with each subsequent baby.

So if you find yourself cramping in those first few days postpartum, remember: your body is still working hard to heal and recover.

Another reminder that birth may be over, but the incredible work your body does doesn’t stop there.

One of our favorite things about birth? You don’t have to do it alone.

Birth was never meant to be a one-woman job.

At Morning Star, your birth team may include your midwife, a birth assistant or midwifery student, your spouse, a doula, and sometimes other loved ones you’ve chosen to have nearby.

Each person has a different role.

Someone is watching the baby.
Someone is caring for you.
Someone is keeping you nourished and hydrated.
Someone is encouraging you through the hard moments.
Someone may be quietly praying in the corner.

And someone is reminding you that you can do this.

Birth is hard work — but you deserve to feel supported, cared for, and surrounded by people who believe in you.
Your birth team should help you feel safe enough to surrender to the work your body was made to do.

Today we celebrate the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary—the little girl who would one day give her fiat and become the Mother of God.

There is something especially beautiful about celebrating Mary’s birth as a birth-centered ministry.

At Morning Star, we believe deeply in the goodness and dignity of every new life. Every baby who enters the world is a gift from God, created with a purpose and known and loved by Him from the very beginning.

Mary’s birth reminds us that God’s plans often begin in the smallest and most ordinary ways—a baby, a family, a mother saying yes.

And just as Mary’s life became a vessel through which Christ entered the world, we pray that every mother we serve feels supported, honored, and reminded of the sacredness of the life growing within her.

“From her arose the Sun of Justice, Christ our God.”

May Our Lady of the Nativity pray for all mothers, babies, and families preparing to welcome new life.
