Hi, friends!

We are reaching out to seek support to help our sweet pup, Hank, walk again after emergency spine surgery. Out of nowhere, Hank suffered an acute intervertebral disc rupture (IVDD) that left him in severe pain & unable to use his back legs & body.

We had no choice but to rush Hank to the emergency vet for immediate, life-saving spinal surgery. While the surgery went well, the initial emergency & medical bills have already reached $10,000.

This cost covers only the emergency stabilization & the surgery itself. It does not include upcoming post-op follow-up visits or the specialized rehabilitation Hank needs to regain strength & mobility.

Anyone who knows Hank knows he is full of life & joy, and how much he loves adventures, hiking, playing, and making everyone smile. Seeing him like this is absolutely heartbreaking, and we are doing everything we can to give him the fighting chance he deserves to walk & play pain-free again.

How the funds will be used:
$10,000: Emergency vet stabilization, diagnostics, and spinal surgery (already incurred)
$3,000+: Post-op medications, dedicated physical therapy, and neurologist visits

One of the biggest challenges that I see working somatically with clients is that so many only understand their story cognitively with the mind. They may know what happened, identify their patterns, name their trauma, & even develop profound insight into where those patterns came from. Few have an ability to actually understand or articulate HOW that story is alive inside of their body or how it is shaping their beliefs, expectations, & the very way that they are moving through life.

This creates a profound disconnect between the brain & body. The mind might think “I am safe now.” Yet, the body may still be living as though the past is happening now.

The body continues to carry the story through tension, bracing, numbness, hypervigilance, shallow breathing, pain, or reactions that seem disproportionate to the present moment. In this way, the body becomes a living memory of our past experiences.

This gap between the brain & body can be incredibly frustrating. We may intellectually know that we are safe in a specific moment, while our nervous system continues to organize itself around the protective prediction that we are not.

Healing therefore isn’t simply about changing the story in our mind. It is also about developing the capacity to feel HOW the story is living in the body through recognizing sensations, impulses, protective patterns, emotions, & physiological responses that have remained incomplete.

The practice is to notice the physical, tactile sensations in the body with compassionate curiosity BEFORE responding to it. Sometimes just being with the sensation is enough to complete the charge. Sometimes working with a somatic professional for support is needed.

Through somatic awareness & completion of the stress response, we create a little bit of space in the nervous system for the body to reorganize itself according to a new narrative. One that is more accurate in the present & in accordance with an embodiment of your choosing.

This is not a one time experience, but a PROCESS that takes time, repetition, & patience. Offer yourself grace & compassion along the way. 💕

Have you ever wondered why shifting your thinking in a stressful situation was so difficult? It’s not because you are broken. It’s because your biology is designed to protect you from real & perceived threat. And this is a wildly intelligent adaptive strategy. The problem arises when the predictive nature of our protective systems inaccurately respond to life situations that do not actually require protection.

Your inbuilt threat detector largely detects safety through the sensory signals in your body. This is why even when you might be able to intellectually understand you are in a non-threatening situation, if your body does not believe you are safe, you will continue to stay in activation.

This is why working with bottom-up approaches, or from the body to brain is often more effective when attempting to regulate your nervous system. This is because we are working at the physiological level through bracing patterns, sensation, breath, movement. Instead of trying to think yourself out of the way that your body is already feeling, we can change the way that you feel to give your brain new information to more accurately respond in the present moment, rather than be swept away by protective strategies developed from our past.

Understanding the inextricable interconnection between your brain & body and how to work with your nervous system rather than against it is one of the most transformative skills to living a life of greater freedom, possibility and choice.

The nervous system is the body’s master command center that takes in data from the senses & informs the body how to behave. Essentially, the nervous system is HOW we make sense of the world. Yet, for so many, the nervous system is operating in dysregulation, that is, a rhythm that is stuck in high alert or shut down largely due to modern chronic stress, burnout, anxiety, & trauma. So if the nervous system is the one running the show, we must discover ways to return to regulation. We must remember the inextricable interconnection between our brain & our bodies so that we may better interrupt cycles of chronic stress, distinguish our past from our present, grow our capacity to meet what is, and access greater possibility & choice for ourselves.

In this experiential workshop we will learn practical somatic tools to support trauma healing, resolve chronic stress & pain, regulate emotions, & build greater capacity for safety, resilience, and connection. We dive deep into the role of the vagus nerve & explore how breath, movement, awareness, & nervous system regulation can support your body’s natural capacity to heal.

Why is hyperindividualism so often worn like a badge of honor? Yes, having an authentic, unique sense of I is important to know who we are & what is important to us as individuals, but we also need a felt sense that we belong to the pack.

Human connection is wired in our biology. Research shows that supportive relationships are one of the greatest predictors of survival, development, lifelong health, & happiness.

Yet, for so many individuals, connection is one of life’s greatest challenges. Some push closeness away while they yearn for connection. Some lose themselves in partnership. Many struggle with effectively communicating their feelings. Others simply desire more intimacy & depth.

Despite the profound significance that human connection has on our physical, mental, & emotional well-being, most of us aren’t taught HOW to be in relationship with others.

We need a supportive foundation to grow these skills. We need to learn how to be in connection with others while still holding a connection to ourselves, how to be seen, how to communicate effectively, how to embody boundaries, how to say yes when we mean yes, how to say no when we mean no, how to give AND receive love, how to become a source of safety for ourselves so that we can respond to others in the present moment rather than from past wounds or automatic protective patterns.

We will explore this in the next Embodied Living workshop where we will explore the Somatics of Human Connection & the Art of Relating. In this experiential workshop we will delve into the biology of human connection, attachment theory & practical tools to build secure relationships, partner practices to build authentic relating & effective communication, the art of giving & receiving, embodied boundary & consent, & somatic practices that foster deeper connection with yourself & others.

Humans are biologically wired for social connection. Our capacity to connect deeply influences how we develop, regulate stress, learn, & shapes our physical & psychological health. Our relationships can offer some of the most potent mirrors into our deepest, innermost layers, reflecting back who we are as well as the parts of ourselves that may need some tending to.

Yet, for so many, relating to other human beings is one of life’s greatest challenges. Some experience social anxiety, others feel suffocated by commitment & vulnerability, others struggle with communicating their feelings, others feeling alone even in relationship to others, some losing themselves in the partnership, or others simply craving more intimacy & depth.

Find people who bring out your playfulness!!

One of the things that we discovered in The Somatics of Play workshop is that play has a powerful capacity to build & strengthen relationships. Playful activities often require figuring something out, or co-creating something together, which helps to improve communication & cooperation. Play also creates a low-stakes environment where it’s ok to make mistakes and be free to be oneself, creating a level of emotional safety & trust that deepens connection.

One of my favorite ways to play is through AcroYoga which is a dynamic partner practice that blends yoga and acrobatics. Play can also be sharing a laugh, playing a game, exploring a new place, or simply being silly together. Regardless the type, Play helps relationships thrive by creating experiences of joy, safety, and belonging.

We will build on this in the next Embodied Living Workshop where we will explore the Somatics of Human Connection. In this workshop we will unpack how we are biologically wired for connection, Attachment Theory, Authentic Relating, How to embody boundaries, and how to build nourishing relationships while still holding an individual sense of I, and so much more!
